Hi POC,
OK... if Yum is a "dumb" servant, then the definers of dependencies
maybe should look into how things are listed - IM*V*HO. Surely something
**optional* *that I install after the initial set-up cannot become a
dependency of something which is/was supposed to work without the
(unrelated) optional bit???? Or as Yumex so kindly lists all wot it's
going to kill off, could there not be a way of deselecting those
elements that are "obviously" wrong??????
(Thanks for the hint on the reply -- I use Thunderbird as my mail
manager & didn't do a very good job on cutting out the bits of the
Digest I didn't want to quote - mea maxima culpa, not Yahoo's fault this
time!)

Looking for a docbook example.
by Steven W. Orr
Is there such a thing as a nontrivial book that is available for free
online that also has the docbook src available? I'd like to learn docbook
and I think having an available example would be a good starting point.
Also, I'm not clear on what the advantage of using docbook is over just
using LaTeX.
BTW, I'm not sure if this qualifies as a proper question for this list,
but I am running F9. :-)
TIA

CUPS, Alpine, and printserving
by Beartooth
I've been advised, more or less btw in an otherwise scarcely
related thread, to quit using my KVM switch (which has spare USB ports
touted by the maker especially for printserving) as a printserver.
So I plugged the printer (an HP psc 1315v) into my #1 machine;
and I've been telling Firefox 127.0.0.1:631 on each of the machines, and
trying to get it to work.
I thought I had it; and when I print at all, it's most often from
Alpine 2.0. So I've been trying to print one Alpine message from each
machine.
One at least told me the printer seemed not to be connected. The
others have adamantly done nothing.
Since all I know of printing would go in a gnat's eye, and Alpine
has several printing options (none of which I understand well), my first
thought is to try to find out if I have a pure Alpine problem, a pure
CUPS problem, or something else. Can anybody tell??

F9: Firefox-3.0.2 browser check by "bcheck.scanit.be/bcheck"
by Joachim Backes
Hi,
In F9, I made a firefox-3.0.2 browser check by using the site
http://bcheck.scanit.be/bcheck
and there was a report:
"Mozilla code execution via QuickTime Media-link files - failed"
Question: can somebody confirm this, and is this a known issue for
firefox? The recommendations to solve this "problem" are rather weird:
===================================================================
If you are running Mozilla Firefox 2 upgrade to version 2.0.0.7 or
later. If you are running Mozilla Firefox 1.0 or 1.5 upgrade to 2.0
branch. Firefox 1.0 and 1.5 are no longer supported by Mozilla Foundation.
If you are using some other Mozilla-based browser, try upgrading to the
latest available version or consult your vendor.
====================================================================
All answers are welcome.

Firefox croaks trying to launch evince
by Sam Varshavchik
For some reasons Firefox can't open .pdf files by default on one of my
machines.
On the first machine, after clicking on a PDF file, Firefox pops up the
usual "What should Firefox do with this file?" dialog, with "Open with:
Document Viewer (default)" setting. Clicking OK downloads the PDF file, then
opens it inside Firefox's window.
On another machine, after doing the same thing, Firefox downloads the PDF
file, the croaks with this error dialog:
"/tmp/<filename> could not be opened, because the associated helper
application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences".
I can manually open /tmp, and launch the PDF file, which opens in evince
normally. Both firefoxes have the same "PDF document" setting in
Preferences/Applications, and both machines have identical /etc/mozpluggerrc
