cp/scp
by tony.chamberlain@lemko.com
Hi
Lets say I have two directories, /home/p1 and home/p2
There is a file /home/p1/file
and then one /home/p2/lnfile -> /home/p1/file
(in other words I did ln -s /home/p1/file /home/p2/lnfile)
if I cd /home and do a
tar -zcvf tar.tz p1 p2
or
scp -r p1 p2 10.0.0.20:
then lnfile is no longer a symbolic link of file, but rather a duplicate.
Is there anyway with tar and scp to preserver the link, symbolic or hard?
You would have to scp/cp/tar enough so that the link would actually point to something.

computer and F7 in 2 days?
by Doug Purdy
Please provide advice on computer, OS, support.
I am a FC2 user. F7 would not install on my computer as it seems
reluctant to boot any DVD even though it installed FC2 fine from CD. I
have another old XP computer with many gigs free too but no DVD. From
messages here it might be possible to get these working under F7 someday
but it will cost too much to spend more time on this now.
I want
- to get going in the next few days.
- to do distance learning of French and Spanish via video courses/
live-video-voice-chat meetings with others.
- to use Antidote, an advanced program for French writing that runs on
FC5 and FC6 with OpenOffice2 or XP and Vista with MS Word, etc.
- to use Linux on at least some computers.
I am ready to do one or more of the following:
- buy an iMac
- buy whatever clone (if I can figure out in a few days which computer
or parts will work and what to use for video conferencing)
- buy XP
- buy RHEL or any other support necessary to get going fast.
I would be glad of any recommendations you would care to provide, here
or in email, or even other places to ask.

In fact, moving linux partitions (excluding LVM) from one computer to
another
is feasible, and I have done it dozen of times (including laptops).
Windows, on the other hand, is almost impossible if the IDE controllers
are different (that is, different motherboards).
But one must know exactly what he is doing, and of course, not using dd (I
use SystemRescueCD/partimage).
However, there are several parameters to change before trying to reboot.
Googling
"How to backup partitions", is the way to go.
But, I only do this because my "/" is packed with 13 GB of applications, and
to install and configure all of them
on several computers at the same time would drive anyone crazy.
The process of reinstalling F7 or whatever from scratch, is a good learning
process for any
user, and the time "wasted" is not lost.

changing intrd
by Karl Larsen
I read the man initrd and it said to make a new file for use you do
this:
CONFIGURATION
The /dev/initrd is a read-only block device assigned major number
1 and
minor number 250. Typically /dev/initrd is owned by
root.disk with
mode 0400 (read access by root only). If the Linux system
does not
have /dev/initrd already created, it can be created with the
following
commands:
mknod -m 400 /dev/initrd b 1 250
chown root:disk /dev/initrd
Also, support for both "RAM disk" and "Initial RAM disk"
(e.g. CON-
FIG_BLK_DEV_RAM=y and CONFIG_BLK_DEV_INITRD=y ) support must
be com-
piled directly into the Linux kernel to use /dev/initrd. When
using
/dev/initrd, the RAM disk driver cannot be loaded as a module.
Well I looked for /dev/initrd in this computer and there is none! So
I think the man page is wrong! Well this is it about for me. All the
Google data is for Red Hat 6.
