how to get dhclient to reconfigure link?
by Joe Smith
I had to unplug my network connection (FC5; single PC-cable modem) for a
couple of hours today, and when I plugged it back in, the kernel
recognized that the link was up again, but the dhcp client did not
reconfigure the link. I tried ifconfig eth0 down/up--no change. I
finally just killed and re-started dhclient, which worked but seems
pretty clunky. What's the recommended solution?

missing kde control center
by Gene Heskett
Greetings;
Running kde, FC6 system uptodate as of a couple of hours ago.
After tonight's update of about 4 items by smart, the control center is
missing from the kmenu.
How can this be restored?

Gave up! Oh, come on, where's your pioneering spirit?
This is the fun stuff. We just need to find out where to start debugging.

It looks like dhclient will "stick" sometimes and not exit with an
"ifdown". I just had this happen this morning. I've been working with
and testing the wireless link on my laptop for about a week with lots of
"ifdown eth0" (the wire) followed by "ifup eth1" (the wireless). This
morning I had to kill dhclient after the "ifdown eth0" before I could
successfully do an "ifup eth1". Maybe if your timing is perfectly wrong
and you catch dhclient when it's getting a new lease or something it
doesn't exit on an ifdown.
BTW, I finally got my wireless running stably on the laptop with
ndiswrapper by going to the 2.6.21 kernel from kernel.org. Really odd
since I configured the kernel with "make oldconfig" and didn't see
anything related to some of the known pitfalls for ndiswrapper (e.g.,
CONFIG_4KSTACKS) but it seems to run fine both over time (several days)
and with lots of traffic (amanda backup keeps getting the rebuilt kernel
files object files as I tweak the configuration). This is with a x86_64
kernel.
Cheers,
Dave

what on earth is blkid doing?
by Tom Horsley
Over in the discussion about disk labeling, the blkid tool was
mentioned. I ran it (no args), and it showed the label on
all my partitions, including the /dev/dvd device, which doesn't
have a DVD in it. The label it showed me was the last DVD I did
have in it a few days ago, and I've rebooted several times since
then. Where the heck is this coming from? Does the DVD drive
itself store that? (I probably haven't powered off the system
since that DVD was in there, so I suppose the drive might be
the one stashing it). Another thing to be paranoid about! The
NSA can keep track of which movies you last watched by remotely
querying your DVD drives! :-).

Mail Preview change in Evolution
by Simon Slater
G'day again
Just a quick question about Classic mail preview in Evolution 2.8.2.1
on FC6. Up until yesterday, selecting an email would preview it in the
pane from its beginning. Now it shows the preview at the end of the
email. I'm sure that I didn't change anything. How can I change it
back? I can't find any reference to this anywhere. I've tried
switching preview view and back again, also closing and re-opening
Evolution but no joy.
Thanks
