Weird reboots (ntpd related?)
by Andre Costa
Hi,
I've been experiencing weird reboots leately -- not the "bad-RAM" kinda
reboots, they seem to be software-related, because they seem to happen
always at the same time.
It usually happens right after boot, when ntpd is synchronizing. This
is what appears on /var/log/messages:
Apr 2 22:21:43 localhost ntpd[2300]: synchronized to LOCAL(0), stratum 10
Apr 2 22:21:43 localhost ntpd[2300]: kernel time sync enabled 0001
Apr 2 22:22:49 localhost ntpd[2300]: synchronized to 200.218.160.160, stratum 2
>>>>> here the system rebooted
Apr 2 22:23:45 localhost syslogd 1.4.1: restart.
Apr 2 22:23:45 localhost kernel: klogd 1.4.1, log source = /proc/kmsg started.
After it reboots, it "survives" -- and even synchronizes again:
Apr 2 22:27:09 localhost ntpd[2319]: synchronized to LOCAL(0), stratum 10
Apr 2 22:27:09 localhost ntpd[2319]: kernel time sync enabled 0001
Apr 2 22:29:16 localhost ntpd[2319]: synchronized to 193.6.222.47, stratum 2
Apr 2 22:43:16 localhost ntpd[2319]: time reset -2.639872 s
Apr 2 22:47:17 localhost ntpd[2319]: synchronized to LOCAL(0), stratum 10
Apr 2 22:48:22 localhost ntpd[2319]: synchronized to 193.6.222.47, stratum 2
Anyone ever seen something similar? Is it really possible that time
syncs could cause reboots? Any other log file I could check for
additional clues?
I am using latest kernel (2.6.20-1.2933.fc6)
TIA
Andre

Argh...Boot options...
by Michael Comperchio
I screwed up .. Again. I was attempting to make my machine connect to the
network at my new job. Somehow I managed to turn on ipv6tables, now the boot
hangs on attempting to load the ipv6tables. Where might I find that
instruction and how do I delete it in rescue mode? Question 2, how can I
change the GRUB boot order? I would like to have the 'other' operating
system default (since that's where I earn my keep!)
TIA

boot up changes
by Weiner, Michael
List readers -
Not sure this has been asked before, and I hope that I can describe my
needs well enough to make sense so someone can answer, but I have a
strange need. I have a laptop that when I am work, I connect to the
network and upon bootup networking starts, grabs NIS information, etc,
and all is well. However, when I am at home without a network, or
anywhere else for that matter, it's a real pain because it takes forever
to 'timeout' getting an IP and attempting to contact the NIS server.
Does anyone have any suggestions on the best approach to fixing this
problem? I thought about disabling the networking on boot up, and
running something like network manager in X. Is there a way to do this
using some bootup profiles and grub?

Authenticated Firewall

Hi,
Does anyone here use authenticated firewalls (SOCKS5, RFC1928)?
If yes, can you tell us a little about your experience with it?
Thanks,

Each of your zone files files should have a header that looks something
like:
$TTL 1D
@ IN SOA ns3.davenjudy.org.
root.fraud.davenjudy.org. (
2006110301 ; serial
3600 ; refresh
900 ; retry
1209600 ; expire
43200 ; default_ttl
)
;
TXT "Dave and Judy Miller's Network"
...
The line "2006110301 ; serial" is the serial number. I'm using
YYYYMMDDxx to generate my serial. The idea is that nameservers
recognize the serial as a means of overriding previous information.
When you bump the serial other nameservers recognize that you have
provided new information.
This particular example is from /var/named/chroot/var/named/davenjudy.org.
Cheers,
Dave

view function of Bind 9
by Edward S.P. Leong
Dear All,
If all of service ( include Firewall ) in the same server, and the
server use Private IP and connection with Router / HUB...
Then use the NAT ( iptable function ) to transfer the IP Address (
Public <-> Private )...
So, is there need to define an external area ( public ip network ) of
DNS for other client ( Internet ) ?
If need, is there an simple sample for reference ?

X with vesa at 1680x1050 possible?
by Patrick Lists
Hi all,
I have a laptop with an ATI X1300 chip and a 1680x1050 screen. Just
installed FC6 on it and was messing with X. The radeon driver does not
seem to work so I tried the vesa driver. But I can't seem to get it to
use 1680x1050 using the vesa driver. It insists on 1400x1050. Does
anyone know if the vesa driver can display 1680x1050? If so how would I
make it do that?
Thanks,
Patrick

Odd problem with Logitech Cordless Elite keyboard
by Kelly Miller
In case no one knows, the Cordless Elite has a bunch of media keys at the top;
Play, Stop, a volume knob, Mute, etc.
I have all the keys working and picked up by Fedora; however, Fedora doesn't
react to the volume knob being turned up at all.
Oddly enough, if I use xev, the knob IS deteched and given the correct key
event, and I can even set it using KHotkeys. However, the system never does
anything when I use it outside of those situations.
