cross compiling on x86_64
by Philippe A.
I have installed FC6 x86_64 on my new system. I would like to know how I can
compile a 32 bit freetype package. The following didn't work:
rpmbuild -bb freetype.spec -bb --target i386
It fails with these errors:
checking build system type... x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu
checking host system type... x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu
checking target system type... i386-redhat-linux-gnu
checking for x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu-gcc... no
checking for gcc... gcc
checking for C compiler default output file name... configure: error: C
compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details.
make: *** [setup] Error 77
error: Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.65705 (%build)
Thanks.

Evolution and Firefox aborting
by Todd Simi
Hi,
I'm running FC6 and am fully updated.
Using Evolution, the program completely halts and and display the
Bug Buddy send screen, which it then says the program doesn't use.
This only seems to happen when sending an email, but not all the time.
I haven't been able to associate with anything, except maybe only when
replying.
Also, Firefox just completely closes occasionally which seems to only be
associated with streaming video. I'm using he mplayer plug-in.
I was wondering if anyone has any idea what this might be before I bugzilla
it.
Thanks

RE: DMA on optical drive
by Michael Klinosky
I mentioned that no ATA is involved here. HA! (Shows how much I now
about the hardware.) I thought that this 'ATA' was some new-fangled
technology. Well, hdparm stated that these CD drives are atapi.
Mikkel:

I checked the bios - only 'on' and 'off'. No way to select the unit.
hdparm states that these drives support sdma0-2 and mdma0-2, and that
mdma2 is enabled.
I couldn't figure out which parameter to use to change the setting.
Here is what I'm working from:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=172278
Yes, I'm sure that my kernel wouldn't have this (old) problem. Btw - how
do I check the kernel version?
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=188377
This is exactly what I get!
ICIM - I have FC 6 and use gnome.

Is there a way to transfer the contacts and mail from evolution on one
FC installation to another?

Nautilus/Gnome Can't Access Vista SMB Shares
by Khoa Ton
I'm playing around with Windows Vista, and it seems that Gnome/Nautilus
on FC5 can't access the Vista shares. Let's say theres a directory
on the Vista system:
smb://vistaserver/sharename/directory
I can navigate to:
smb:///
smb://vistaserver
smb://vistaserver/sharename
but when I double click on a directory under the share, I get an error
window:
Nautilus cannot display "smb://vistaserver/sharename/directory".
Please select another viewer and try again.
The directory icon becomes a generic paper document instead of a folder
at this point.
I can get to the same Vista sharename and directory using smbclient fine:
$ smbclient //vistaserver/sharename/
> cd directory
> dir
[listing of directory files]
I can also use Nautilus to get to Samba shares as well as Windows XP shares.
Also, other Windows systems are accessing the same Vista share fine.
Looks like an incompatibility with Nautilus or gnome-vfs somewhere.
This is what I'm running:
$ rpm -qa | grep nauti
nautilus-open-terminal-0.7-1.fc5
nautilus-cd-burner-2.14.3-2.fc5
nautilus-sendto-0.4-7.2
nautilus-2.14.3-1.fc5
$ rpm -qa | grep gnome-vfs
gnome-vfs2-devel-2.14.2-1
gnome-vfs2-smb-2.14.2-1
gnome-vfs2-2.14.2-1
gnome-vfs2-2.14.2-1
Any suggestion as to where to look for more detailed error messages would
be appreciated.
Thanks,
Khoa

FC6 and Flash
by John
Stupid question; I'm setting up a new box (used) with FC6 and can't
remember where I got Flash for FC5. I know I should've bookmarked the
site/s I got from people, but didn't. Help!

No ATA involved here - only pure IDE. All of this hardware (all 3
computers) are vintage 1999 - 2004 (I don't know if that matters).
Is there anything else to mention about the hardware?
> If that is not the problem, you may be able to use hdparm to turn on

Are you saying that my problem is more likely that DMA is *off* (and
should be on)?

Can I generate Installation DVD from Development repository
by Mohd Izhar Firdaus Ismail
I'm trying to get Fedora 7 Test 2 from http mirrors (I'm inside my
university LAN which only allow port 80 & 443 outbound, so torrent is
a no go) .. but all of them that i've checked and have the F7T2 DVD
does not reply the size of the file in the request thus making
resuming not working - bad for unstable internet .. and
download.redhat.fedora.com does not host the Prime DVD ..
However, I do have a mirror of the development and extras-development
repository in my server in the LAN (mirrored together with the core,
updates, extras and livna repos - for use by me and my friends) .. Is
there any way for me to generate the installation DVD from that
mirror?? .. upgrading through yum is dependency hell considering I'm
using 3rd party repo ..
Or anybody have a better suggestion besides this?

missing zd1211rx firmware
by Philip Walden
I just bought a Airlink awll3026 USB wireless adapter as it supposedly
is supported by the zd1211 driver in FC6.
When I plug it in I get in dmesg:
usb 1-1: Could not load firmware file zd1211/zd1211b_ub. Error number -2
zd1211rw 1-1:1.0: couldn't load firmware. Error number -2
usb 1-1: reset full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2
zd1211rw: probe of 1-1:1.0 failed with error -2
usbcore: registered new interface driver zd1211rw
ath_hal: module license 'Proprietary' taints kernel.
ath_hal: 0.9.17.2 (AR5210, AR5211, AR5212, RF5111, RF5112, RF2413, RF5413)
wlan: 0.8.4.2 (0.9.2.1)
Googling around I see that some file is expected to be found in
/lib/firmware, but this directory is empty.
Is there some package I specifically need to install to get the
firmware? I have 2.6.19-1.2911.fc6.
