recommended x86_64 java plugin
by Wade Hampton
I am running FC6 on a few x86_64 machines. The 64-bit java JRE from Sun
does not include a mozilla plugin. What is the recommended 64-bit plugin
for Firefox or should I use the 32-bit plugin with nspluginwrapper?
Thanks,

FC6 & LTSP
by Frank Cox
I have a LTSP server that I just updated from Fedora Core 4 to Fedora Core 6,
and also updated it to LTSP 4.2.
I can log in to the machine locally, and I can get the GDM login screen on the
terminals as well. However, when I enter a username/password on the terminal
it accepts my password and the screen goes blank for a few seconds and then the
GDM login screen returns.
If I log in on the server and then use the same username/password on the
terminal, it tells me that I am already logged in and do I want to continue. I
say YES and the screen goes blank and then returns me to the GDM login screen
again.
I can't find any log that tells me anything of value here. /var/log/secure
says "Session opened for" and then "Session closed for" two seconds later, but
nothing else.
It appears to be not loading the Gnome desktop when logged in from a terminal.
Does anyone have any ideas about why it would do that? I have been fiddling
around with this for most of the day and haven't gained much ground from when I
started.

FC6 Nautilus file properties options are crap
by Tim
Has anyone had a look at the options you get for setting file
permissions in FC6's Nautilus? No longer you can tick on or off read,
write, or execute permissions individually for user, group, and others.
You get a drop-down for owner read-only or read/write, a drop-down for
group none, read-only or read/write, likewise for others. But only one
tick box that lets everybody or nobody execute the file? It seems
stupid, in the extreme, to be able to end up setting something with file
permissions like: rwx --x --x
The addition of some SELinux options is welcome, but the two choices are
quite lame: user or temporary data, nothing else is offered.
The properties dialogue doesn't make any contextual changes for when
you're playing with directories instead of files. The executable toggle
is still labelled "allow executing file as program".
If this is aimed as less techno-savvy users, it's going to be confusing.
And for those who know about permissions, the thing is seriously
unhelpful.

Window positioning?
by Bill Case
Hi;
Another possible bug, in the continuing series.
Who or what is responsible for positioning newly opened windows in
Fedora 6 and Gnome 2.16? Is it Fedora, Xorg, Gnome, MetaCity, or the
application.
It is very annoying after a while to have to move almost every new
window from the top left corner to the centre of my screen. Is there
any way to set up my system so that every window opens centred? It
should be an option. Some may dislike the fact that the top window
covers up other smaller windows. I am not one of those. I would like
everything to start centred.
When applications expand from an iconfication on the panel they can
retain their positioning. Why can't they when they are newly opened?
There used to be a geometry option for applications, but it hardly
exists anymore. (Never really worked anyways). To me there should be
an hierarchy of options. First a global positioning option, that can be
overridden by an application option that can be overridden by a last
used option.
I forget in which Fedora core this changed, but removing options for the
user and allowing only one way, the developers way, has an M$ feel to
it.
It strikes me that Gconfig-editors is the proper place to provide these
choices.

Printing problems with FC6
by Tom Cross
I have a recently updated/freshly installed fedora core 6 workstation
with an attached printer. I'm trying to set it up so that other
computers can print to the attached printer.
I cannot find anywhere in the "system-config-printer" program that says
"allow printing from network".
I had to edit /etc/cups/cupsd.conf and add a "Listen hostname:631" and
an "Allow mynetwork" line there.
After I added them, the two lines mysteriously disappeared. We tried
reproducing the program by starting system-config-printer again, making
changes, restarting cups, etc... the changes stayed. I'm thinking
whatever overwrote my cupsd.conf is waiting for me to be out of the
building to break it again.
Is there a proper "fedora-way" to tell cups to allow for network
printing?
Is there a reason why my changes to cupsd.conf are getting replaced?
Thanks!!
