No sound after bad dvd in xine
by Andy Pieters
Hi all
I was playing a dvd in xine and outputting it as SPDIF to my surround decoder.
The dvd (rental) is gone beyond use and caused xine to crash. I killed xine,
waited five minutes for the system to release its grasp on the dvd player,
then ejected it.
Now, it seems like the system is locked in passtrhu mode and every setting I
tried on the alsamixer failed to bring back my normal sound.
For information, I use a coaxial cable from my soundcard's digital out to my
surround decoder. On normal operation, the decoder detects the stereo signal
and uses it, and when playing films, it detects the DOLBY signal and acts
accordingly.
I tried a system restart to no avail, and the only remotly usefull reference
to this same problem I found with google, solved itself magically after three
days.
Being an audio junkie, I cannot live without my music for three days so please
help me with this one.
O, and believe it or not, when I put another dvd in, the sound is there in
5.1. But nothing else is working.
WIth kind regards
Andy

Weird character at end of tabs in terminal
by Dan Track
Hi
When flicking through the tabs on my gnome terminal using "Ctrl+Page
Up" and "Ctrl+Page Down" I get a weird "5~5~" character repeat, until
I let go of the keys. This never used to happen on before FC4.
Is there anyway I can solve this?
Thanks

I agree with Robert. Paying $40 isn't too bad when you consider
the cost of Photoshop. Unfortunately, while versions 5, 6, and
7 of Photoshop earned a "Silver" rating, CS is rated "Known not
to work" and CS2 is untested. While certainly good enough for
occasional use, I'm not sure even a silver rating is good enough
for a professional to rely upon. Silver is defined as, "This
application installs, and runs well enough to be usable. However
we find it has enough bugs to prevent it from running
flawlessly."
To the OP, your other option is Wine (www.winehq.org). Again,
it appears that version 7 runs under wine (your mileage may
vary). It also looks like some folks have Photoshop CS and CS2
running so you might look into that a bit more. It's also free
so you have less to lose.

Slow direcrt access to floppy (FC2)
by Mike McCarty
I find that directly opening a floppy (unmounted) and reading it
is very slow on my machine. I understand that this may be a known
problem with FC2.
Do later releases address this?
If not, is there a fix in the works?

Adding printer in FC4
by André Fettouhi
I am trying to add our network printer (HP Laserjet 4100) on my newly
installed FC4 box (P4 3.0 GHz). Adding the printer in itself is no
problem at it works afterwards without a problem. Now the problem is if
I shut down the PC or do a restart then I have to add it again. For some
reason FC4 doesn't remember it. Can anybody tell me why this is happening.
Kind Regards
André Fettouhi

Newbie: Writing console messages to a file FC2 2.6.5
by Clive@Rational
Hello,
I have an unreliable FC2 / 2.6.5 kernel machine. I
am running it as a file server. From time to time the
machine "hangs" or puts out lots of messages of the
form
<+0x0nnnnnnn> ... debug info ...
I am guessing these are kernel error messages. I
want to capture these messages so I can post them when
an error occurs. At the moment the messages are not
written to any file that I can find - so I can't
retreive them, then post them once I restart the
machine.
Now the reading I have done has got me as far this
this .....
The kernel messages are directed to the console
because of the following setting
/etc/syslog.conf
# Log all kernel messages to the console.
# Logging much else clutters up the screen.
kern.* /dev/console
My question is
Can I change this to
# Log all kernel messages to the console.
# Logging much else clutters up the screen.
kern.* /syslog/CRLconsolelog
So all messages are written to a file?
Can I get the messages written to BOTH a file and the
console at the same time?
Will this capture ALL Error messages that appear at
the console?
What happens if the machine goes into a loop - I don't
realise - and eventually the file fills the whole
disk? Will I then be able to restart Linux?
Anyway of cycling this "kernel/console message" log
file automatically?
Thanks
Clive

Need help with smb printing
by Maureen Kelly
I have installed Fedora Core 4 on a new machine and am generally very
pleased. However, I am having trouble with printing to an SMB printer.
The print server is an OS/2 Warp Server for e-Business machine
functioning as the primary domain controller for a small network. This
server supports OS/2, Windows and Linux clients and has worked
flawlessly for several years.

I issue smbclient -L, the result is:

I created network printers using CUPS on the Fedora machine
corresponding to the printers listed above. I can print test pages
using the graphical print configuration tool, however when I print from
an application, the printing fails. I set the CUPS debugging level to
debug2, but there was not much information of interest in the log files.
I quote the parts which seem relevant to me below:

The first error message above seems to come from the smbspool command
used as the backend.
If I issue smbspool by itself, I receive the same error message.
[root@fedora mok]# smbspool smb://MOK:password@coffmx94/PRINTER 1 user
title 1 '' /usr/share/gimp-print/doc/gimpprint.ps
ERROR: Error writing spool: SUCCESS - 0
(I chose the gimpprint.ps file above just because it is large.)
When I check the spool directory on the server machine, there are files
created, and they look like the beginnings of valid postscript files.
However, each has the same file size: 73728 bytes. The files end
suddenly in 'midstream'. The size is, of course, a small fraction of the
correct file size and tantalizingly is equal to 9*8192.
I have never had trouble printing to this server before using smb but at
that time I was using RedHat 6.2. I must be doing something wrong but I
am now at a loss. Has anyone seen a similar problem? Does anyone have
any ideas?
Thanks!

ghostviewer
by roland
Hello,
A document opened in a browser, automatically starts the Gnome Viewer.
The printer deskjet 990Cxi is used as a postscriptprinter = standard.
But when I get the view of a document it is hardly readable.
What is wrong?
