Floppy disk (filesystem size)
by Fred Nussbaum
Hi,
I'need to write 1440 (1K blocks) to a floppy disk.
This is the size of a driver for the hardware, that I
need to be able to install FC3 (from an (FC3-)ISO
image) .
How do I create a floppy that can hold 1440 (1K
blocks)? Or what alternative do I have?
Thanks!
Fred

Strange name resolution
by Patrick Nelson
FC2 Up to date.
I run a master and slave DNS service for an intranet (.mynet) and 8 FQDN
internet. I can not seem to figure out what is happening a thought I
would throw it to our list. Here are the facts: On my intranet domain
I have systems named as cities like newyork.mynet. My DNS resolves
these fine. I also have CNAMEs like svn.mynet in my say newyork.mynet A
set. When ever I move one of my CNAMEs in my primary intranet zone.
Say svn.mynet now points to windycity.mynet. I basically do a rndc
flush & reload on the master and a rndc flush, reload, and refresh mynet
on the slave. If I check it with dig svn.mynet @dns1.mynet and dig
svn.mynet @dns2.mynet the resolution is as I would expect: pointing to
windycity.mynet. However, if I do a ping from all my systems every
system pings windycity.mynet except dns1.mynet (the master DNS).
Here is what I have tried: I have checked the hosts file and I'm not
running any other name resolution. I have stopped and started both
master and slave DNSs. And I've ever rebooted these systems. No matter
what I do it keeps point the svn.mynet to newyork.mynet on dns1.mynet
and this is driving me crazy. So I must not fully understand something.
I had given up on it and inserted a svn1.mynet SVNROOT variable in all
systems .bash.profile and added it as a CNAME of windycity.mynet in my
DNS zone. Everything works now except...
I pinged the svn.mynet on dns1.mynet and now the darn thing has resolved
to windycity.mynet. Argggg! This is exactly one week after I made the
change.
Anyone have any idea what is happening? It sure appears to be a cache
issue but I'm not sure what are how to clear it. Note also this has
happened before so it is not isolated. TIA

Graphic problems after FC3 startup process.
by luis.bermudez@att.net
Over the weekend I removed Windows XP and tried to install FC3 on my brand new Dell Inspiron 600m. I succeeded, even in getting the modem working (thanks to Linuxant), except for a small problem. Sometimes after I switch on the machine and it goes through the startup process, either in graphical or text mode (it doesn't matter), and before getting the login screen, the windows freezes and I loose control over the laptop leaving me the only option of switching it off. Sometimes the screen freezes just when the status bar gets the 100% of processes done and some other times it gets blank right after this and without showing the mouse.
After re-starting the machine (improperly switch off) I check the file system integrity and then it normally goes through the start up processes and reaches the login screen allowing me then to log on.
During the installation I selected the Generic LCD monitor with a 1400x1050 resolution (although I am using 1280x1024).
The FC3 distribution I installed comes with the 2.6.9-1.667 kernel and a brief description of the hardware I got in this laptop is:
Intel Pentium M Processor 745 (1.80 GHz/400 MHz)
14.1 Inches SXGA+ 64Mb Video (ATI Technologies Inc. Radeon Mobility 9000 M9)
Memory 1.024 Mb DDR 266MHz SDRAM 2 Dimms
Hard drive 60 Gb
Although I use Linux every day, I am a user and my knowledge of system administration is very limited. That is why I am sending you this e-mail with the hope you know what is going on and can help me to fix this annoying problem. Thanks.

KDE RPM installation problem
by Dumping Ground
Hi,
I am facing a problem while installing any RPM application. Just to tell you I am using Fedora Core 3 on KDE 3.3 environment. Whenever I double click on any RPM it opens up the archieve manager instead of installation manager... but if I double click on the same RPM from GNOME it gets installed, i tried to google this problem but have not got any answer as of now.... Now whenever I have to install any application I have to do it from Command Line. Also to tell u the same thing works from GNOME but not from KDE.I am sure that there must be some setting to make this work on GUI.
Earlier when I was using Redhat 9.2 I was able to install the packages from KDE.
Is there any particular setting to enable this feature.
Thanks & Regards,
Prabodh

HELP: Presentations with FC3 (again...)
by Gustavo Seabra
Hi,
I need to make a presentation using OO Impress under FC3, in about 3
hours from now. I followed some suggestions I got here, and this is
what I got so far:
- I boot the computer, then connect the projector. Pressing Fcn+F8
sends the image to the projector, but doesn't "loop"
display|projector|both as it should. It's either display or projector.
- The image on the projector is always cut at the left end. I can
never get the whole image there.
- When I press Fcn+F8 to get back to the computer display, it always
comes back with the image larger, and only half fits the screen, so I
have to press CTRL+ALT+F7 to get the display back to normal.
- Definition: The display is using 1152 x 864 definition. The
projector seems to recognize that, and all works fine there, except
for the left are, which is cut out. I tried everything with the
projector, there just seems to be no way to make this left area
appear. (I already moved the horizontal all I could)
- Booting with the projector already connected makes no difference at all.
Does anyone knows if I need to change any configuration to get it to
work right? I just wanted the whole slide to appear! (The part too...)
Also, do I have to change anything to get the Fcn+F8 to llop correctly
(including the display+projector part) ?
Thanks!

Gnome Pilot: Initalize palmOne Treo under FC3
by Chuck White
I'm a newbie to Linux using Fedora Core 3 and a palmOne Treo (Palm OS
5.2.1). I've Googled, searched the fedora-list archive, and executed
instruction found at http://fedoranews.org/tchung/gnome-pilot/. Two
error messages follow:
Error Message 1:
[root@localhost chuck]# pilot-xfer -l
No $PILOTPORT specified and no -p <port> given.
Defaulting to '/dev/pilot'
ERROR: No such file or directory (2)
Error accessing: '/dev/pilot'. Does '/dev/pilot' exist?
Please use --help for more information
Error Message 2 (obtained from '/dev/pilot'):
This link can't be used, because its target "/dev/ttyUSB1" doesn't
exist.
Additional Background:
FC3 Machine: Sony Vaio PCG-GRX520 (Laptop with no old style serial
ports)
FC3 Updates: All installed using up2date
Random Observation on '/dev/': Browsing the directory, I don't see any
ttyUSBx.
If you've read this far, you're a real trooper! Thanks for your time and
I hope you can help.

Xorg configuration
by Mark Haney
Kind of a stupid question, but it's my first time dealing with this
issue with Xorg. I installed a server here at work and initially had it
CLI only. Now, however, a few mouse-dependent people requested GUI
access to it, so I yum'd the gnome packages down. But I've not
configured X and I don't know how from this setup. Any help?

Re: iptables -- trying to redirect, but doesn't work (and related guru question)
by John G. Norman
Trevor,
THANKS for the reply, but that didn't work. In fact, -j REDIRECT to a
certain port and -j DNAT are equivalent (though with DNAT you have to
say "--to 192.168.10.101:8080 (give an IP and a port). (For just one
explanation of this, see
http://www.linuxsecurity.com/content/view/117557/49/ where they note:
"REDIRECT: This is a specialized case of DNAT that alters the
destination IP address to send the packet to the machine itself. This
is useful in circumstances where one wishes to redirect web traffic to
a local proxy server, such as squid."
In any case, I tried your suggestion:
/sbin/iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp --dport 80 -j DNAT --to
192.168.10.101:8080
Still doesn't work.
My related guru question is: How can I tell on a running system if the
kernel was compiled with "fast switching" for the network? Apparently
this has to be set to OFF for this kind of redirection to work.

Jobs and & plus kill option
by Mark Sargent
Hi All,
if I start mysql with the following, ./mysqld_safe & it becomes a
background daemon, yes..? And, if I type jobs, it should show the
running mysql, yes..? I don't get this, although mysql shows as running
and I can connect. I also can't kill using, kill 'pid number'. Why do I
get this.? Something fundamental I'm not understanding..? Cheers.
