Network/Modem more woes...
by Sam Stinson
Hello,
Thanks. I'm using FC 1... why would an installation cause external symbols
while starting up?
Thanks,
Sam

Network Server displaying nothing
by Nicholas Ruddick
I've having a problem with Network Servers not displaying anything apart
from Windows Servers. I have smb.conf as follows
[global]
workgroup = LGSOC
server string = DopeFlish Box
security = DOMAIN
log file = /var/log/samba/%m.log
max log size = 50
socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192
os level = 33
preferred master = No
local master = No
domain master = No
dns proxy = No
wins server = 192.168.0.1
idmap uid = 16777216-33554431
idmap gid = 16777216-33554431
[homes]
comment = Home Directories
read only = No
browseable = No
It did a couple of times show all the servers in my network but not now.
I have a samba server domain controller running that is master browser
of the network and works with all the other machines in my network so I
don't know whats wrong. I tried changing my workgroup name in gconf but
no joy. What should I try next?

common fixes. Any Help Is Greatly Appreciated!

Lexmark Z35 Printer driver
by Mike Lurk
Here is some useful info for someone who is trying to install a Lexmark
Z35 printer in FC 2.
1. Download the latest driver for the printer from the Lexmark site;
CJLZ35LE-CUPS-2.0-1.TAR.GZ
2. Untar the file; tar -zxvf CJLZ35LE-CUPS-2.0-1.TAR.GZ and you should
get a file called
3. Before you run it make sure you have;
cups-devel
tcl-8.4
tcl-devel-8.4
tk-8.4
tk-devel-8.4
4. Make a link to libtcl8.4.so in /usr/lib and rename it to
libtcl8.3.so, and do the same for libtk8.4.so and rename it to
libtk8.3.so. If you try to run lexmarkz35-CUPS-2.0-1.gz.sh before doing
this it will not install, you will get an error. The installer is
looking for libtcl8.3.so and libtk8.3.so.
5. Open a terminal window and (if you don't have one open) and run the
driver file by invoking the command.... sh lexmarkz35-CUPS-2.0-1.gz.sh
(oops you have to be root to do this)
and follow the instructions in the GUI. When it is finished it will give
you a button to do a test print or to exit. Try the test print if
everything is done properly you should get the Lexmark test page.
That's it. It worked for me. Creating the links and renaming is probably
not the best way to do this but so far it the only way that I found that
works.
Mike
P.S. It even prints in Mozilla

Problem with cd/dvd burner PX708UF
by Eric Tanguy
this burner is plugged by usb and fc2 don't want to recognize it as a
cdrom/dvrom device. If i switch it on with a cd in it the system don't
recognize it and when i launch k3b it don't find a burner. If i switch it
on without anything in it k3b recognize it as a burner. This device will
make me crazy ...

Re: FC2 won't boot - RH9 to FC2 (Solved)
by Atsuko Crum
It turned out that links under /boot directory did not updated. After I
created the new links and removed /boot/message entry from lilo.conf
file, the system booted fine.

NForce2 question...
by Jason Salaz
I've also been hesitant with moving to FC2, since it seems that my
NForce2 chipset mobo (MSI K7N2 Delta-L) doesn't like the 2.6 kernel all
that much. Is there anyone out here that's having the same issues with
overall slowness, or even lockups?
Could this be related to the 4K Stack issue?
I am convinced that FC2 is stable, but I want my performance back, like
I have with FC1!
Just wondering.

Prism2 Wireless on FC2?
by Dave Ashby
Just upgraded to FC2.
Good news: unlike FC1, pcmcia detects my wireless card at boot.
"cardctl ident" yields:
Socket 0:
product info: "The Linksys Group, Inc.", "Instant Wireless Network PC
Card", "ISL37300P", "RevA"
manfid: 0x0274, 0x1612
function: 6 (network)
Socket 1:
no product info available
Bad news: wlan0 doesn't find the prism2 driver when I plug in my card.
From /var/log/messages:
May 29 14:33:05 Sacajawea cardmgr[1487]: executing: 'modprobe prism2_cs
2>&1'
May 29 14:33:05 Sacajawea cardmgr[1487]: + FATAL: Module prism2_cs not
found.
I thought I recalled some discussion that the orinoco_cs driver should
work for this card, but I can't figure out where to change the driver.
Changing the "alias wlan0 prism2_cs" line in /etc/modprobe.conf causes
my card to no longer be detected at boot (although I don't see any
likely errors in dmesg or /var/log/messages).
On FC1 I had to use the prism2 rpms from
http://prism2.unixguru.raleigh.nc.us/ to get pcmcia + wireless working.
Since FC2 seems to have my pcmcia working without any tinkering, I hoped
I could get my wireless up by changing some config files.
Does anyone know how I can get my wireless up and running?

FC1 install fails to boot
by allan@troi.cc.rochester.edu
I am trying to install FC1 (sic) on a new system that came pre-installed with XP
using month old iso cdroms I previously used successfully to install FC1
on an AMD xp2600 system. The new system will be an audio workstation and I'd prefer,
for now, to run a patched 2.4 kernel until a 2.6 kernel with low latency patches
and other performance tweaks becomes available and tuned.
The P4 FC1 install seems to proceed without a hitch, but the system hangs upon
first boot with a blank screen after loading the kernel modules (after
Enabling swap space OK )
and never gets to the Welcome screen.
The system: -------------------------------
P4 3GHz 800 FSB, Gigabyte 8i K 1100, Intel 875P chipset, 1 GB dual chan. Samsung DDR,
Matrox Millenium G550
Disks: Seagate 120 GB ST3120022A (system disk for both linux and XP)
Western Digital Raptor 740GD SATA 74 GB (to be used only as a sound disk)
Intel 82801EB ultra ata controller, 82801ER raid controller, ICH5R sata controller
Plextor dvdr px-708a
Floppy drive (came DOA, so unavailable until I receive the replacement)
Texas Instruments OHCI i333 1394 host controller
(Also: Intel pro/100 ve network adapter, M-Audio Delta 1010, Planar 1910M,
Logitech optical corded kb & cordless wheel mouse )
------------------
Win xp still runs fine. I cannot boot into linux single mode.
In rescue mode, all my linux and xp file systems mount correctly. The swap
partition is 900 MB.
Looking at install.log.syslog, install.log, anaconda.cfg, dmesg and other
config and log files no obvious problems jump out. The only error message I see
is in /var/boot.log:
Window Manager warning: Failed to open connection to a session manager ... SESSION_MANAGER
environment variable not defined.
I tried re-installing with the firewire controller disabled in the bios and (for
good measure, disconnecting the firewire cable from the motherboard.) Same result.
I thought that the problem might be the sata controller, but ata_piix seems to load properly
and my understanding (http://www.linuxmafia.com/faq/hardware/sata.html) is
that from 2.4.22 on ata_piix is a part of the libata driver set.
I've seen the i875 chipset listed as fully compatible with newer kernels.
In googling the Gigabyte 8ik 1000 mobo I came across 2 references to its use
on linux systems.
I'm stumped and at this point and for the moment don't even care about tuned performance.
Right now I just want to get ANY linux distro installed on this system and get moving.
Now that the dust seems to have settled on how to avoid the FC2 dual boot MBR
problem (so that I don't have to worry about winding up with neither a usuable
linux nor xp system with which to troubleshoot this problem)
is it likely that that the newer FC2 build would install succesfully
where FC1 fails? Should I try a newer 2.4 kernel?
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.
