MPlayer / xine
by Joe Dumais
I downloaded and configured the two subject programs. They work
fine on audio files and streams, but not video. MPlayer, on .wmv streams,
reports asf redirect error. Xine crashed with an xiTK sigsegv error. I have
all the win32 codecs DLLs configured. With xine, the -V Xv option does not
work and reports an <xv> problem.
Is there a way to fix any of this?

yum Q (again)
by Gene Heskett
Greetings;
Yum version is 2.0.7, FC2 upgraded from RH8 machine.
1. I thought I had killed the automatic yum invocation, but it
apparently came back on for some reason and ran last night,
which is puzzling.
2. yum proceeded to update a bunch of stuffs last night sometime,
stuff that included libxml2, but its apparently a fresh package as
its dated yesterday in the cache.
3. yum etc is still working, which after previous experience,
plumb amazes me!
4. Whats wrong with this exclude line in my yum.conf inserted
below that would cause it to ignore my exclude of libxml2 stuffs?

Unhandled exception in anaconda crashes upgrade of RH9 to FC2
by Mike Fleetwood
Hi All,
After a few issues trying to upgrade my RH9 to FC2 I have finally come
to an impasse because anaconda keeps crashing with an unhandled
exception. This occurs when trying to detect the existing RH9
installation. Hopefully someone can help.
Upgrade attempts:
1) Upgrade fails to detect my AdvanSys SCSI adapter.
2) Discovering that the AdvanSys driver in kernel 2.6 is not up to date
and FC2 doesn't support it. 2 methods of trying to load it by hand
from installation CD 1 fail. Finally find:
Advansys SCSI Cards and Fedora Core Linux
http://www.city-fan.org/ftp/contrib/drivers/advansys/
and am using a CD containing advansys-fc2-boot.iso to boot and
start the upgrade from FC2 install CD 1. Now the upgrade fails to
detect my existing RH9 installation and only offers to install a new
FC2 installation.
3) Boot with 'linux upgradeany' command. When detecting my existing
RH9 installation anaconda reports the unhandled exception.
4) Remove /etc/redhat-release and boot again with 'linux upgradeany'.
anaconda now finds an unknown Linux distribution to upgrade. As
soon as [Next] is clicked anaconda reports the same unhandled
exception.
5) Impasse.
Other relevant facts:
Hardware is a PC with an Athlon CPU and 1 GB RAM.
Installation CD passes checksum test.
/dev/sda2 contains / FS of my RH9 installation.
In the anaconda dump below the local variable desc contains 32 NULs.
They are just converted to (^) and (@) for display in this email.
Thanks in advance,
Mike

Core2 install stymied on old (i686) computer...
by George Williams
I have an old machine which won't boot from cdrom, nor from a USB
device.
I was able to install RH9 from a floppy, but that doesn't seem to be
supported any more.
I have the disk space to copy all CDs onto a disk (which will not be
munched by the install process). Is there any way to boot from that?

AMD cpu slows down (I think)
by Trevor Smith
I'm trying to find info on my laptop problem but can't find anything really
explanatory. I assume it's something to do with CPU speed auto-setting on
battery power and your site seems to be relevant.
My situation: I have a Compaq Presario 2197CA, AMD Athlon XP-M 2800+ CPU. With
Fedora Core 1, no problems on AC or battery power. After upgrade to FC2 with
kernel-2.6.5-1.358, originally no problem (I don't recall). But at some point
I updated the kernel to kernel-2.6.8-1.521 and possibly then, possibly
because of some other "upgrade" my computer slips into a different mode when
on battery power.
In this "mode" it becomes extremely, irritatingly slow to use. A command shell
takes visible time to scroll/update. GUI windows take maddening seconds to
draw, etc.
Research leads me to believe that this is a "feature" of the Powernowstuff or
something, but it is definitely not a feature I want.
A found a web site
(http://www.codemonkey.org.uk/projects/cpufreq/powernow-k7.shtml) that says:
"This meant that until version 2.6.6 of the kernel, Powernow was non
functional on these laptops."
and
"Compaq Presario 2100. Has 14 PST tables. None of which match the cpuid of
the processor (0x7A0)"
I conclude that this means that my original FC1 and FC2 kernels (pre-2.6.6)
would have had disfunctional support for Powernow but that my new kernel has
"fixed" support for this. And this, I assume, is the source of my problem.
However, I can find no docs about how to control Powernow or, better yet, turn
it off (I use my laptop at school and home and I rarely use battery power so
it's not an issue for me).
After my long ramble, 4 questions:
1. am I correct in my assessment of the situation, do you think?
2. how could anybody want to use a system that is struggling to update windows
and such, no matter how much longer it made their batteries last?
3. is my problem more likely the result of poor/nonexistent graphics
acceleration which causes the CPU to do graphics work as well as system work,
thus when the CPU is slowed down, graphics slow down?
4. how can I turn this damn Powernow thing off?
Thanks in advance.

Dare I ask the question?
by john brennan-sardou
Hello all,
Having waited impatiently for fedora three to come out, can
you give me any idea as to when the final will hit the scene? Ok you
will say when everything is top notch (as usual). I have had problems
with fedora two (essentially because of my lousy material) and I am
raring to go for fed3. The test 3 looks really good. Thanks for any
information (even in weeks or months as to when it will come out.

gnome-terminal full screen: slow!
by Carles Cufi
Hi there,
My gnome terminal seems quite slow in full screen (1400x1050), specially
when scrolling with vi inside long files.
I wonder if this normal, since the rest of the system goes quite fast,
and xterm just scrolls really fast...
All other programs scroll reasonably fast, gnome-terminal seems to be
the exception. Of course, it depends on its size, if I resize to be a
small window then it runs fast enough.
Thanks for any help!

I guess it all comes down to bios; I've seen a lot of cases where nvidia
didn't work; even with the binary driver (nvidia focusses on the desktop
chips not so much on the laptop ones).
So.. whatever you buy google first to see if others could make the
laptop work.....

why doesn't "df" show a larger logical volume?
by Robert P. J. Day
in prep for trying to install oracle on my FC2 system, i used
"lvextend" to extend one of my logical volumes by a few gig. but when
i mounted it again (did i have to unmount it first?), "df" showed me
the same output as before.
should i have expected "df" to show me a larger 1K block value? now
"lvdisplay" shows me:
LV Name /dev/vol0/archive
VG Name vol0
...
LV Size 14.00 GB <-- looks good
but "df" shows me:
1K blocks Used Avail
/dev/mapper/vol0-archive
10321208 2336136 7460784 24% /archive
^^^^^^^^ ??
so where'd my extra 4G go? and should i assume it's just going to
show up when oracle dumps a 10G footprint on my system?
