Default config for some services
by Pedro Fernandes Macedo
I'm looking for some help here..
Today , while talking to my boss, he said that , when comparing two
boxes , one running Suse and other running Redhat/Fedora , the Suse box
is more secure then the Redhat/Fedora box.. He said that running nessus
on both showed that suse was more secure..
Anyone knows why?
He mentioned something about the default config for apache , as an
example... Maybe we could find out what are these "security flaws" so we
can create an RFE on bugzilla to make a default install safer to everyone...
Any ideas?
(I'm asking this just because I want to improve the security of fedora,
as I dont like suse a lot.... just my personal opinion...)

Unsubscribing
by James Thompson
Hi all,
I am desperately trying to unsubscribe from this list but the "mailman" won't let me. It wants a password but I never supplied one when signing up. The list administrator has apparently gone AWOL and doesn't answer emails.
Does anyone have any suggestions or know how I can reach the list administrator?
Many thanks.

where does gnome store the list of applications associated with files
by VJ
Hi,
I want to know where does gnome store its global list of
applications
associated with various file types. The reason for this is that I want
to associate XMMS with mp3 and m3u files for every user on my linux
machine. I do not want to ask every user to do it manually but provide
with some standard applications associated with various files.
Thanks in advance.

Easy path to MySQL4??
by WipeOut
Hi,
Is there an easy way to upgrade to MySQL 4.0 on FC1.. I tried pulling
down the RPM's and they install fine but the php-mysql will not install
becasue it loohs for the old mysql as a dependency..
Anyone got any ideas, or found an easy way to upgrade? (maybe a yum
repostitory somwhere has MySQL 4.0 and php-mysql that work together :) )
later..

Did you just install Windows?
If you did, Windows has over written your MBR with its
own on the
primary hard drive.. you will need to install grub
again into the MBR..
Best bet is to boot CD1 in rescue mode as others have
suggested..
For future reference if you want a dual boot system
its best to install
Windows first and then Linux..
later..
well i have a compaq and it came with windows. compaq
also has a partition on the primary hard drive for
recovery. compaq system recovery ran after I
installed linux but I cancelled it because I didnt
want my windows info wiped out. Would it be a good
idea to put my hard drives into removable trays so I
dont have to use a bootloader altogether?

Hi Luca,
I've had the same problem. I tried using smbtar, and also tried using
smbclient, but kept getting the errors. In the end, I removed the samba
packages that shipped with FC1 and replaced them with the ones from RH9.
Then the scripts worked again. To be specific, now I am using the
following samba packages:
samba-2.2.7a-6
samba-common-2.2.7a-6
samba-client-2.2.7a-6
If you have RH9, you can get them from it. If not, you can probably
download them from rpmfind or some such place. Probably not the solution
you wanted, but it worked for me.

mplayer vs. xine
by Brian C. Huffman
I'd like to have a show of hands of who's for xine and who's for
mplayer. Which one is the better choice for a complete multimedia
solution? I've used both and have to say that I've had problems with
both.
With xine I've been able to play most all formats with the exception of
Windows media (although I know the codecs are out there). I've gotten
the gxine frontend which includes a plugin for mozilla. Unfortunately
I've had many many crashes of mozilla / xine when using the plugin.
With mplayer (which I've just recently installed), I've had better
stability (although it has crashed on inline movies), but I don't know
the extent of the formats that it can play. Also I haven't seen a
frontend to mplayer so far....I assume that one does exist.
Thoughts? Experiences?
Thanks in advance!

RE:mplayer vs. xine
by Antti Aspinen
there are gui for MPlayer(it comes with sources), have you tried
./configure --enable-gui option when compling mplayer, then start it
command gmplayer, and by the way you need to download skin and font pack
to it from www.mplayerhq.hu :)
and from there you can also have soooouseful information about mplayer,
you didn't read dokumentation, didn't you?, shame! :D [don't take that
so seriously, I didn't read them either when I first time tried MPlayer
:) ]
Then one thing, Xine is britty good but like you said it is unstable. :(
I like more xine than mplayer, xine is better DVD player, even thought
it is hard to get difrent regions to play, (mplayer handles that britty
easy), gxine is waste of time, only thing were it is really good when
using gnome and you need to listen radio or watch internet tv (I watch
bbc news, for example)
And best things in xine is that it can change audio/subtitle track on
air. In MPlayer it will restart video from beginning. and in MPlayer you
can't change multipletrack file(aka .ogm) subtitles, only audio track
change is supported.
I give xine 8/10 and MPlayer 6/10, MPlayer is light weight media player
when Xine is very hard one.

"Lock" screen in fedora with real-time movement?
by Julian Underwood
Is there a way to "lock" the screen in Fedora and still see everything
which is happening on the screen, as if it were unlocked? That is, if
you try and do something (i.e. move mouse, use keyboard) the console
will say "no, enter password." Ideas?
TIA,
Julian
