Can one roll a kernel using the vanilla kernel rpm? I know you would need kernel-devel and possibly headers, but can it be done? I tried giving it a go, as the i686 kernel seems to be rolled with intel and I want to get all the gusto I can as I have an AMD-64 chip. Which, from what I'm seeming, is not checked off in the Fedora stock build.

As you just want to change one option, I'd continue using the fedora kernel. This page can be useful:

Fedora rolls a lot more functionality into the kernel than the standard vanilla kernel. If you use a vanilla kernel, some things might not work as expected. I suggest using the Fedora supplied kernel. Even though its i686 and not AMD, I am sure you wont notice any perceptible difference in speed. You might find a difference with performance measurement software.
I dont bother compiling for my specific processor anymore .... thats just my 2 cents.

Can't you just extract the config file from the kernel rpm and fire up your kernel building process of choice? Then you'd have all the Fedora goodies, and can adjust just your proc specs.
Mind you, I haven't built a kernel since the 2.2 days so I could be completely off base here. Forgive the noise if that's the case.

The OP is not seeing the AMD64 stuff turned on in the kernel SRPM on his 32bit install.
If he wants a 64bit install, he should reinstall with the 64bit media, but most likely, the extra AMD-ness, and 32 extra bits aren't going to be all that noticable to him.

Use the regular kernel SRPM.
Based on the discussion at http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2007-December/msg01531.html and inspecting the kernel.spec file, I did this by running
rpmbuild -bb --with vanilla kernel.spec
That appears to skip all but one patch to the vanilla kernel, as noted in the comments. (Also modified the spec file to add a local suffix to the RPM version number.)

no ... the fedora kernel has lots of redhat specific patches, which often make their way into the vanilla kernels eventually. the config file will reference these patches which will not be recognised in a vanilla kernel.

Which is why I can't roll a kernel with what I have installed?? I can't make mrproper on it, it belches on infiniband something or another. I guess I have to dnload the src package. I also guess if I'm going to have to do that, then I'll also WHACK all of the modules cruft out that I recognize, but if I use the existing .config file, it'll barf again? <swears> I have the faint feeling my head is gonna hurt again. :) Ric

I know the kernels in the RH clustering product seem to require the Infiniband modules. (Don't know why...) But the kernel I built from the SRPM didn't require anything unusual that I recall.

What exactly are you doing to build your kernel? kernel-devel doesn't contain kernel source. That's only in the kernel SRPM.
See my instructions in a previous post. I can think of some ways to work around the config issue if you really want to whack modules (but the only burden of modules is that they get compiled. They don't get loaded if you don't load them.

Note: at least for me, on kernels for FC4-6 vintage, if I try to take all modules out of the kernel and turn off modularity when using RedHat's patched kernel tree, the resulting configuration will either not compile or not boot. The same .config file used on the vanilla kernel tree included in the srpm will build and boot (too a running system). So you might configure out most modules if you want (I do for some small systems), but I suggest do not try to build from the srpm with a configuration that disables modules altogether. And IIRC there were some modules that for the hardware I was supporting, I did not need a module, but because of the way RH had made it's patches disabling the module would cause a kernel to fail to compile or boot. Sorry I was lazy about reporting them but at the time it was easier to either go vanilla or leave the module in, and now I don't remember which ones.
