Bonjour,
I post again my problem: on my f12 install I have a problem with symlink /dev/cdrom, /dev/dvd, /dev/cdrw, /dev/dvdrw which all exist *until I insert a disk in the device*, as soon as the disk is mounted, these links are erased and don't come back untill the next boot.
I would like to know if anybody else experienced the same problem and I am searching a clue to solve this problem.
I suspect HAL or udev, but don't know how to search.
I have a fully updated fedora 12
Thanks for attention.

Computer is Dell latitude D531.
lshw gives:
*-cdrom description: DVD writer product: DVD+-RW GSA-T21N vendor: HL-DT-ST physical id: 0.0.0 bus info: scsi@4:0.0.0
I have no special config for this, just use f12 from fedora repos
Thanks for answering

I have no specific solution to your problem. Is your DVD in a dock or installed in the notebook? I know the D531 has bay for swapping out drives, etc.
The only thing I can say is that on my system SELinux caused problems when updating, configuring, etc., so much so, that I turned it off. After I did, some of the problems I was having went away. However, I had to do a clean install, and disable SELinux before doing the first update to get everything working.

What you describe sounds like a udev problem. It is udev that is responsible for creating the devices. I have no brilliant solution but it sounds like for some reason udev decides that those /dev files are not needed when confronted with an inserted. Now one question. Are you inserting data CDs or music or video CDs? Only data CDs are mounted. Are you somehow trying to mount a music CD?

udev is responsible for creating, but hal is responsible for hotplugging.... So....
I tried to use debugging with hal, but I did not see anything suspect (I can be wrong, because I am not an expert...)
I tried to debug udev too, but this is almost impossible: logs go on console at boot time, and are unreadable....

No, I don't try to mount music CD, video DVD are automatically mounted and it is during this phase that the links are erased.

No, I don't try to mount music CD, video DVD are automatically mounted and it is during this phase that the links are erased.
No non-data CDs arwe not mounted in the usual sense. You see the icon on the screen but running mount command will not find them mounted.

Not sure whether you intended to include video DVD in the "non-data" category, but a video DVD contains a UDF file system and can indeed be mounted and browsed. The program is contained in files in the VIDEO_TS directory.
