Hi,
after reading documentation on fedora.redhat.org, yum and apt sites I can't see any other way out than asking you for help.
the problem: I got installed a server with fedora, I have ssh root access to it. The installation was done without mysql and without php-mysql.
I'm trying to install it now from command line.
I understand that the right tool for it is yum and not up2date. However when I try to install i get: # yum install php-mysql Gathering header information file(s) from server(s) Server: Fedora Core 1 - i386 - Base Server: Fedora Project testing RPMS for RHL 9 Server: Fedora Project update RPMS for RHL 9 Server: Fedora Linux (stable) for Fedora Core 1 -- Fedora US mirror Server: Fedora Core 1 - i386 - Released Updates Finding updated packages Downloading needed headers Resolving dependencies ..package MySQL-devel needs MySQL-client (not provided) package MySQL-bench needs MySQL-client (not provided)
in my yum.conf I have:
[base] name=Fedora Core $releasever - $basearch - Base baseurl=http://fedora.redhat.com/releases/fedora-core-$releasever
[updates-released] name=Fedora Core $releasever - $basearch - Released Updates baseurl=http://fedora.redhat.com/updates/released/fedora-core-$releasever
#[updates-testing] #name=Fedora Core $releasever - $basearch - Unreleased Updates #baseurl=http://fedora.redhat.com/updates/testing/fedora-core-$releasever
[fedora-updates-9] name=Fedora Project update RPMS for RHL 9 baseurl=http://download.fedora.us/fedora/redhat/9/i386/yum/updates/
[fedora-stable-9] name=Fedora Project Stable RPMS for RHL 9 baseurl=http://download.fedora.us/fedora/redhat/9/i386/yum/stable/
[fedora-stable-9] name=Fedora Project testing RPMS for RHL 9 baseurl=http://download.fedora.us/fedora/redhat/9/i386/yum/testing/

Now, I can't believe that php-mysql-client is not available in the official repositories fedora.redhat.org etc.
Besides, I read on this list and, if I recall, on tht fedora site, that the current version for php on fedora is 4.3.4, what I see is only 4.3.3 and no update is offered. I also have installed Fedora on a machine at home some time ago and it also has php 4.3.3 and doesn't get updated (it has php-mysql though).
So the questions are: 1) Is there something wong with me (meaning, that although I'v used hours to read docs I didn't get the clue), or with the repositories? 2) How can I install pjp-mysql?
Thanks for any help
Paolo
Paolo,
Why don't you give APT a try?.
I use it frequently, and it works like a charm.

I wonder if yum isn't selecting packages from an inapropriate repository or form several repositories, some of thwihc are inappropriate. Try separating out your repositories into different yum configuration files, and then select the one you wiant with yum's -c option.

I think you or someone else has installed a non-fedora mysql package, since the packages in fedora are named mysql, mysql-server and mysql-devel. MySQL isn't the same thing as mysql in the wonderful world of rpm. So, you should remove all MySQL rpms and instead use the fedora packages. Remove them, then do yum install php-mysql again, and it will grab mysql along with it.
Note: mysql in fedora is 3.23, so if you need 4.x you'll have to look elsewhere for mysql and related packages.

That's a very good catch! It's true I installed mysql myself with the rpm provided by mysql.org. I couldn't figure out that this kind of problem has something to do with this.
Removing mysql 4.xx solved the problem and I could install with yum as expected.
Note: mysql in fedora is 3.23, so if you need 4.x you'll have to look elsewhere for mysql and related packages.
It would be nice to have and play with it, however I guess I can wait for Fedora to include it.

Thanks Paolo
apt-get install phpmysql (as root).
downloaded all necessary packages (4) in less than 4 minutes and had them installed right away.
Why bother with yum?

My boxed end wrench took a nut right off.
Why bother with yum?
Why bother with an open end wrench?
Answer: Neither will work if they are the wrong size.
The packages are going to be the same no matter what dep-solver you use. If the problem is the repository doesn't have the package, how does changing to apt help?
Spot on, so then have sources.list include the right repositories.

up2date would do just as good in this situation. Maybe even better, if your config file for yum is the problem. Probably the same if third party packages are the issue.
However when I try to install i get: # yum install php-mysql Gathering header information file(s) from server(s) Server: Fedora Core 1 - i386 - Base Server: Fedora Project testing RPMS for RHL 9 Server: Fedora Project update RPMS for RHL 9 Server: Fedora Linux (stable) for Fedora Core 1 -- Fedora US mirror Server: Fedora Core 1 - i386 - Released Updates Finding updated packages Downloading needed headers Resolving dependencies ..package MySQL-devel needs MySQL-client (not provided) package MySQL-bench needs MySQL-client (not provided)
As someone else pointed out, Fedora doesn't ship MySQL, they ship mysql.

Testing packages (labeled as Stable)?

php 4.3.3 ships with Fedora Core 1. php 4.3.4 is available in the testing updates.
I personally would suggest:
Comment out anything that isn't "fedora.redhat.com" in your yum.conf until you figure out what is causing the issue.
Figure out what you have installed now for mysql:
rpm -qa | grep -i mysql rpm -qi <mysql_package_name>
Hello,
I would really like to know which is better, yum or apt? Which is the advantage of the best over the other?

In short, apt has more features, and is more mature. Yum is young, and still has a road to go.

This discussion is as worthless as "which is better, vi or emacs".
Try them both, use the one you like.

Oh but we can't compare apt to emacs until we have a "doctor mode"! Me semi-seriouslythinking of writing one in Lua.. now what could be better than saying
"apt-get doctor" :)

Please just pick one and try it for yourself. If you cannot make up your mind you could try reverse alphabetical order. OTOH you could try alphabetical order.
If you figure out this one you could try to solve the eternal vi or emacs problem.
Both of these depend on your religion. :-))
