Dear All
How can I know whether my modem/router is synchronized at 8Mbps for download stream?
Thanks in advance,
Paul

Does yours have a telnet or HTTP interface? Mine does, and there's status pages for connection details.
Your ISP may also provide a status page for your account.
Thanks in advance,
Sends bill in advance... ;-) Don't send any post-dated cheques, though.

Very humorous, Tim!

Isn't there a manual for your modem/router? But the obvious test is to try browsing to its IP address.

google for 'broadband speed test'
and choose one of the many many pages that come up
Thanks, Chris, but I get different results depending on the site used:
or
http://www.wugnet.com/myspeed/speedtest.asp
Thus, I do not know about which one I should rely on.

Well, I just tried both those sites and they both pretty much agreed that my speed was 1.9 MB. I am suppose to get 2M, but 1.9 is as about as close as you'll get to that in reality. Also note that the test is statistical, it samples your speed for a few seconds. Any other network activity will perturb the results. Probably running the same test on from the same site a few times will show you the kind of variation you should expect.
So, what speeds do you see ?

The bandwidth test sites mentioned offer a decent method of testing Internet connection performance. As mentioned, other network traffic will interfere with your results so I'd recommend you average out several tests over a few days (and at different times). I do this when testing changes to my firewall/router. I'm not really interested in maximum speeds just the average.
Comcast, my ISP, advertises 8Mbps down but I typically see 6Mbps down (and 390kbps up). I intend to call them to make sure I'm receiving their "fastest" service as they've added speed tiers to their Internet offering. (long after I was a subscriber)
As for synchronization et cetera. I have a Motorola SB5100 from Comcast. It's diagnostic interface is accessible by pointing a web browser to 192.168.100.1. The only relevant information I can see from these web pages includes signal-to-noise, power level and error logs. Google your make/model cable modem for information on how to access it's diagnostic info.

You might also see some difference in speed depending on the port you are using. On the web (port 80), I get about 5 Mbps while on Usenet (port 23), I get about 6.5 Mbps.

Thanks in advance,
Turn on SNMP if possible in your modem and i have a sollution.
I just asked it myself too and got a sollution. See my webpage (dutch) on: http://www.p-s.nl/ and click menu ADSL Line Sync.

Depends on the branche and model. I have Alcatel Thomson 510iV4 , almost all Alcatatel Thomson modems has SNMP functions but disabled by default. Entering into the telnet interface and put some commands that can be fount in the CLI manual from the ADSL Modem. I guess if another brand, look into manuals and/or google on it. I am sure you will find a answer.

Thanks, Danny. I have checked the modem configuration with the web interface and I could see there that the model is configured to 8Mbps, as it is in the contract with my ISP.
