What's the current "right" way to tell Linux (F10 in my case) to slow down the CPU speed when the core temperature is too high? (aside from the box's built-in "turn on wind turbines before it melts" option ;)
First are you over clocking ??? Second is your CPU fan right for your CPU??? What I found is most preople use way too much heat sink compound ... here's a tip ... first buy the good silver compound ... $9 at radio shack ... next clean off the old shit ... use black electrical tape to mask the area that the compound is suppose to be ... Next put a small dab and use a safety razor to spread it ... the end results sould be a thin square area ,, too much doesn't work ... if your CPU still over heats you still other problems ... I don't have a problem with box kits you know cpu/fan ... just know your system ... mine runs fine at 35c

It's a pre-built DELL box, no overclocking. When all four cores are running at full speed (3.16MHz) for extended periods, the temp gets up around 85 C and the fans all speed up. I'd rather keep it cooler than that. One way is to reduce the clock speed. Another way is to dust the fans off, which I'll also be doing :-)

Have you tried to use Gkrellm and gkrellm cpu freq plugin ?
I have a valid lm-sensors config ("sensors" tells me the four core temps). I have /sys/devices/platform/coretemp.* and they tell me the right core temps.
It is not absolute temp. it seems 5-10 oC higher than real temp.
It's a pre-built DELL box, no overclocking. When all four cores are running at full speed (3.16MHz) for extended periods, the temp gets up around 85 C and the fans all speed up. I'd rather keep it cooler than that. One way is to reduce the clock speed. Another way is to dust the fans off, which I'll also be doing :-)
You may 1) change cpu heat think, and/or 2) get down cpu voltage(what do you say, i forgot, but many PC vendors do not support this), and/or ..... But you can try '/usr/sbin/fancontrol' if you have fan noise other than high cpu temp. cpu temp limit might be 105oC or so.

look for program 'cpuspeed'. it was available in fc3, fc6, fc7, fc8. not sure if it is available for f9, f10, but i imagine source is still around in archives or koji.

iirc, cpu speed is handled thru settings in /proc/scale and you have to have a module loaded for it. iirc?

Have you taken a look at sensors-applet (http://sensors-applet.sourceforge.net)?
It works on my Toshiba laptop running Fedora 10. I found it the other day already installed on my laptop which means that I probably downloaded it from one the standard repositories that I use for Fedora 10 or that it was part of the Fedora 10 DVD iso image since I did not install it from SourceForge.net.

sensors-applet is part of the gnome-applet-sensors package.
