My X-server hangs after running for a few minutes. I run gnome. The mouse continues to move on the screen, but the keyboard dies and the clicking the mouse has no effect.
I can ssh into the machine and kill a ton of processes to exit out of the XServer.
I have an ATI graphics card...
# lspci . . . 05:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO] (rev 01)
I am not using any third-party drivers.
I upgraded this box from 6 -> 7 -> 8. I recently learned about the fedora yum upgrade FAQ. For a 7 -> 8 upgrade, the FAQ recommends...
# yum groupinstall sound-and-video gnome-desktop
When I try this I get the text appended to this message. Sorry about the line-wrap.
What should I do next?
TIA, Pete

This is not really an answer but perhaps a place for some further investigation. I had a system with an nvidia card that exhibited the same symptoms you are describing. I isolated it to some interaction with one of a set of screen savers and the video driver. If I stopped using the screen savers I no longer had the problem. If I changed to the vendor drivers I didn't have the problem. Before I could do any more investigation I ran an update on the system, which included a new kernel and video drivers and the problem was gone.
It might be worth investigating the video systems and the screen savers.
HTH, sorry I don't have a real "solution" for you.

I'm pretty sure this isn't related to screen savers because I am using the display (moving the mouse and hitting keys on the keyboard) when the X server gets bogged down.
I removed a bunch of packages using "yum erase". I finally got to a point where "yum groupinstall gnome-desktop" worked. I also noticed a recent update to the Fedora ATI xorg drivers, but I'm still experiencing the hang. Now I don't have any mouse or keyboard. The caps lock, scroll lock, num lock leds don't change when I hit these keys.
When I login remotely, top tells me that the xserver process (X) is using 100% of cpu.
I can post my Xorg.0.log, but it is large (59,684) and I don't see any errors in it. There are warnings.
What should I do next?

I left this machine running overnight with the X process at 100%. The next morning the following lines were appended to Xorg.0.log...
(EE) RADEON(0): GetBuffer timed out, resetting engine...
I opened the case to confirm the graphics card type (ATI 9250 / 128 MB DDR TV-out DVI 64-bit). When I did this I noticed the fan attached to the heat sink was frozen.
My new guess is the card would overheat when the X server started.
Does this seam reasonable?
I've ordered a new ATI graphics card. This one just has a heat sink (no fan). I picked ATI over NVidia just to try the new Fedora ATI drivers.
I had a similar "fan lockup" problem on other NVidia and ATI cards. If this is the problem, does anyone know where I can purchase a replacement fan? It seems like a waste to throw the card away. It works at run level 3.

The saga continues. I hope I don't develop the same reputation as Karl L. ;-)
Even though I removed the fan from the ATI graphics card, a friend suggested I drop back to the standard VESA VGA X driver and see if that worked. It did. Even with screen savers and OpenGL applications the X server did not freeze.
Should I post a fedora bugzilla report for the ATI driver?
I have xorg-x11-drv-ati-6.7.197-1.fc8 loaded.

That's quite likely. Or, it might work until you did something graphically intensive, then fail. I've certainly come across the latter.
I now own a fairly good NVidia graphics card thanks to a failed fan. It belonged to a friend who's computer would die after a while, and he didn't bother to find out why until I goaded him. In a typical Windows user fashion, he just rebooted and re-installed repeatedly, hoping that would magically solve his crashes. Pulling the PC apart, we found a seized fan.
Faced with having to spend a silly amount of money for a fan that would fit onto the card, or a similar amount to buy a new and better card, or jury-rigging an extra fan into his case. He bought a new card, and gave me the old one. I just sat an ordinary computer case fan next to the card to cool it, and it runs fine. In fact, this fan cools the whole card, and cools it better than the piddly little fan that came with the card.
If you ever notice your computer making rattly noises, or badly vibrating fans, now's the time to open the case and check whether you've got a fan that's getting ready to die, and whether you can replace it.

Thanks for the info Tim. You may have missed my last post. A friend related a story about a noisy fan on a MB support chip. When he posted the problem and mentioned the MB model someone else mentioned they had the same MB, but their support chip just had the heat sink. He simply removed the fan and it worked.
To test this theory for the graphics card we removed the fan, opened the case, and pointed a fan directly at the card. The card x server still froze. The heat sink that was under the fan was *not* hot to the touch.
I dropped back to the standard VESA VGA X driver. It worked. It even worked with screen savers and OpenGL applications.
I'm wondering if I should I post a fedora bugzilla report for the ATI driver?
The card freezes when I use xorg-x11-drv-ati-6.7.197-1.fc8. Considering the fan problem, my bugzilla report may get ignored. I don't see similar complaints in the red hat bugzilla database.
I'm waiting for a new ATI card. I'm not sure if it has the same ATI chip. If it does and exhibits the same problem, I'll definitely make a bug report.
Any ideas welcome. Pete

Well, I got the new ATI AGP card, but got absolutely no display when I put it in the machine. I put the original card back in the machine and looked at the red hat bugzilla data base one more time and found
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=404261
Adding the following
Option "AGPMode" "4"
Seems to have solved the problem.
I hope that helps someone else. Pete
