I now have X11 via ssh working on F9, but refresh of the remote X11 window is extremely slow, even over a 1GB switch. Is there a way to speed up the refresh?
Thanks.

This is a local area network? I've only ever noticed human perceptible X speed problems on a lan if the network equipment was faulty and dropping packets and retrying like crazy (or if the app is trying to do something like software-only open GL over the network).
For long distance high latency connections, I use freenx which gives every indication that it employs magic to speed things up :-).

The app I am running as a remote X11 is Maple 12.

That's one of the options I will look into.

Are you using the -C (compress) switch to ssh? If you aren't, try it.
Kevin Kofler
Using the -C flag and invoking XMaple, it takes 1'38" to load the initial screens. This over a 1G switch. The delay is repeated every time the maple windows need to be repainted. The delay makes remote X11 way too slow for XMaple.

Something must be deeply wrong there. Here it takes 25 secs for the main windows to get into a state where I can type in it. And that's through a not blazingly fast adsl + wireless, on a netbook.

Are you running XMaple 12 in your test, or some older version?

Good question! It's v.9 only.

I know nothing about maple, but if it is heavily graphics oriented, VNC might actually work better, if you run the VNC server on the remote system and vncviewer on the local system (using ssh forwarding for the VNC port if necessary to get through firewalls).
Since vnc only paints screen diffs since the last time it painted, you often find heavy graphics work faster (though interacting with graphics is another matter :-).

Suggestion: If your hardware supports it, turn on compositing (Preferences > Look and Feel > Desktop Effects if using Gnome). As a side effect of drawing the windows offscreen and composing them into the final screen image, the windows are always mapped (unless minimized, even if not on the active desktop), do not suffer any damage when obscured, and therefore require far fewer redraws.
I often run apps at home and display them at work, and enabling Desktop Effects makes a world of difference.

This looks like a plan. How do I do this running Xcfe?
Thanks.

Prefs -> Window Manager Tweaks -> Compositor -> enable checkbox.
Thanks.
