Im trying my best to update my newly installed Fedore Core 2. It seems I will never get done with the sources set up in /etc/yum.conf and /etc/sysconfig/rhn/sources, so I found this site: http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/updates/updating-sources.html
So I tried adding some sites, but I'm not sure how. Ive tried one one line and on separate lines, but to no avail. If they are one one line, i get strange results, so I guess thats wrong: here is what I have now:
/etc/yum.conf: [base] name=Fedora Core $releasever - $basearch - Base baseurl=http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/$releasever/$basearc... http://wftp.tu-chemnitz.de/pub/linux/fedora-core/$releaserver/$basearch/os/ http://download.atrpms.net/mirrors/fedoracore/$releaserver/$basearch/os/
[updates-released] name=Fedora Core $releasever - $basearch - Released Updates baseurl=http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/updates/$releasever/... http://wftp.tu-chemnitz.de/pub/linux/fedora-core/updates/$releaserver/$basea... http://download.atrpms.net/mirrors/fedoracore/updates/$releaserver/$basearch...
/etc/sysconfig/rhn/sources: yum fedora-core-2 http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/2/$ARCH/os/ http://wftp.tu-chemnitz.de/pub/linux/fedora-core/updates/2/$ARCH/os/ http://download.atrpms.net/mirrors/fedoracore/updates/2/$ARCH/os/
yum updates-released-fc2 http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/updates/2/$ARCH/ http://wftp.tu-chemnitz.de/pub/linux/fedora-core/updates/2/$ARCH/ http://download.atrpms.net/mirrors/fedoracore/updates/2/$ARCH/
This gives me 82 updates, and thats the same amount as with the deafult, but when I launch up2date it says my system is already up to date??? Whats up here, what should I do?
Best regards Søren

up2date has a different configuration file than yum. Try "yum check-update" to check for updates, and "yum update" to actually do the update.

Where are those configuration files, I think I would prefer to use this nice up2date applet :) Is it just as good as yum or?

/etc/sysconfig/rhn/sources
Note that the syntax of this file is different from /etc/yum.conf
You might also be interested in replacing up2date and its nice applet with gyum and yum-applet - see http://fedoranews.org/tchung/gyum/ and http://fedoranews.org/tchung/yum-applet/ respectively.
As for which is best, that's a matter of personal preference. Why not try both and see which you like best?
Paul.

Oh maybe the problem is a very different animal, here is what i get if i run "yum check-update":
rpmdb: PANIC: fatal region error detected; run recovery error: db4 error(-30978) from dbenv->open: DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error, run database recovery error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - (-30978) error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/yum", line 30, in ? yummain.main(sys.argv[1:]) File "/usr/share/yum/yummain.py", line 163, in main (log, errorlog, filelog, conf, cmds) = parseCmdArgs(args) File "/usr/share/yum/yummain.py", line 75, in parseCmdArgs conf=yumconf(configfile=yumconffile) File "/usr/share/yum/config.py", line 155, in __init__ self.yumvar['releasever'] = self._getsysver() File "/usr/share/yum/config.py", line 285, in _getsysver idx = ts.dbMatch('provides', self.distroverpkg) TypeError: rpmdb open failed
What can I do about this? Is there a database recovery tool I can use?
Best regards Søreb

That looks like an RPM database problem. Does "rpm -qa" give you a list of installed RPMs?
Which version of yum are you using ("yum --version"), and which version of Fedora Linux are you using?
The database can be rebuilt using "rpm --rebuilddb" If that doesn't help, you may need to "rm /var/lib/rpm/__db.00[123]" and try "rpm --rebuilddb" again.
Paul.

Oh well, it turns out that I have a HW problem, looks like my motherboard is fried, Im investigating now to see if I need to buy a new one.
Thanks for the help anyways :)

have you tried rebuilding the rpm databases? When I have problems with yum hanging or giving errors I rebuild the databases and it works then.
#cd /var/lib/rpm #rm __db* (or you can move them to somewhere else if this doesn't feel too good) #rpm --rebuilddb

Your up2date configuration is invalid. See the comments in the sources file:
### an yum style repo ### format: ### type channel-label url
_Each_ line has to look like this. The yum.conf syntax does not fit.
