It has been an interesting 24 hours. Managed to get what appears to be a RH8 apt-get dist-upgrade to take. Now, also have a yum version for rh8 installed, and a /etc/yum.conf file to look at. I want to use yum to move rh8 up to rh9. Can you point me to the documentation to set yum up to do that? Any pointers appreciated. My goal is to keep upgrading until I get to FC4. Is this doable, without the ability to burn CDs? Tom

Yes, by doing a fresh install from the network :-). Seriously now, there are some issues about upgrading from one version to another using yum. See the list archives. The recommended to install FC4 is backup - fresh install - get the data back from the backup.

If you have a fast connection and can dl the cd/dvd, you can install from the hard drive. All you need do is copy the relevant vmlinuz and initrd.img to /boot, amend lilo.conf/grub.conf to suit, backup /home & /etc and reboot. You'll then have various ways to install FC4.
Hi, ne: Sounds good. I am on dsl, a new thing for me. Downloading seems to be about 27Kb/something. I'll give it a go, but would feel more comfortable, if there was some documentation of the steps to follow. I'll start a google search to see if I can find something similar (but with more detail) to what you described, below. Wish me luck. Tom

Instead of luck, how about a little advice? Don't try to download the images using a browser. Use wget. Poke around on the web until you find the mirror(s) you wish to use, and get the URLs for the ISOs. Then use wget to do the download(s). You might also want to look into the -c option of wget. When downloads take > 20 hours, sometimes things happen. I needed to reboot under Windows, for example. In any case, not having to hover over the download is a great convenience. One caveat: wget can't handle the DVD ISO, I believe. It has a 2GIG file size limit, IIRC.

I'll bet it has. You have certainly set yourself a challenging goal. Perhaps I shouldn't use the word "goal". Umm, project. (I hear that the word "goal" implies that one has a plan to achieve one's desire, which has a reasonable chance of success.)
Why do you need to do that without the ability to burn CDs? IIRC, the last time I bought a CD burner, it was about $40 USD. Even if you pay yourself only $5 USD per hour, you'll burn that in one day.
Of course, download time is pretty gruesome. I got those 4 ISOs using ADSL, and it took me two full 24 hour days to get all of them.

Hi, Mike: I'm on a VA pension. I have to wait until CD burners are available through university surplus stores in the $5 dollar range. :)
OK, so, can I use yum to upgrade from RH8 to RH9? Do you know where I look to find the URLs to put in the yum.conf file that would do that? Thanks, Tom

THANK YOU VERY MUCH
Secondly, can someone from the Fedora Core project please tell me whether, if I burnt some CDs for this guy and mailed them to him, free of charge, it would violate copyright or license agreements?
Of course, I'd have to remark that I take no responsibility for what the CDs might do to your computer :-)
Oh, I just noticed, you want RH9? I thought you were trying to get to FC4.
Anyway, I have the ISOs (all 9 of them) for FC4. If it is permissible, and you agree, I'll burn you a set of whatever you want and mail them to you. I recommend that, if we do this, you get the ISOs off the discs, and verify the SHA1 checksums for them before trusting them. I wouldn't trust anyone, especially me!

The license is the GPL. This is completely allowed under the GPL. Go for it.
Hi, Mike: Terrific! I think it should be alright, as I am managing day-to-day operations for Open Studios (http://www.ibiblio.org/studioforrecording/), a 501(c)(3) organization, and I'll send you a receipt for tax deductible donation. We're still too little to have a budget to work with (doesn't stop us, just slows us down a lot from doing the work we want).
I want to move from present RH8 to Fedora Core 4. Since I had to incur the cost of DSL (no choice in the matter) when I moved to Charles City, IA, in June, I figured I could work on the upgrade using the faster connection speed. Ultimately, I should be able to stay current with distro upgrades. Tom Poe Open Studios 510 15th Avenue Charles City, IA 50616 Ph: 641-228-3271 www.ibiblio.org/studioforrecording/ EIN# 46-0483739

The first four are the install discs, rescuecd is, well, the rescue CD, and the last four are the sources.
I also have another rescue CD (not the Fedora one) and Knoppix (not the latest).
Hmm, those dates look suspicious! I got the last two only yesterday. just a sec... [starts a new shell] I just ran the SHA1 sums, and they agree with the one from the website, so I guess they are ok. But I got the SRPMS using wget, so maybe that explains the date discrepancy.
Well, let me know what you want. I've got to go to the bank today, anyway, so I'll burn you some CDs before I go. I wonder what I can use as a mailer? Maybe some old AOL boxes.

Hi, Mike: The install CDs would be fine. I can make a boot floppy to get me out of trouble, when I install. Once installed, I can get source directly onto hard drive, right? Thanks, Tom

No, you can't. The Fedora kernel is too big to fit on a floppy, so you can't boot the installer from a floppy or create a boot floppy during the installation.

You can download the source right now, if you want. Anyway, I presume that just the four install discs are adequate. I'll burn you four (4) CDs and ship them to you, media rate, at no charge. They may take a few days to arrive. If that's not acceptable, and you need faster delivery, then maybe you should consider the other option of installing from downloaded ISOs directly.
Mike
Hi, Mike: Please send them. Markku also mentioned it might be better to send the rescue CD as well, since Fedora is now too big for a boot floppy. And, thanks, Mike. Tom

Ok Tom, here's the situation:
I have burned you five (5) CDs, to wit:
FC4-i368-disc1 FC4-i386-disc2 FC4-i386-disc3 FC4-i386-disc4 FC4-i386-rescuecd
I labelled each of them with a Sharpie(R) laundry pen, so you should have little difficulty in recognizing which is which.
Each of the ISO images was checked by me to have the same SHA1 hash as listed on the web site before being burnt to CD. I did not read back and verify the disc images from the burnt CDs. I did, however, insert each of them, and verify that Fedora Core 2 recognized them, auto-mounted them, and they could be browsed. I also booted from the rescue CD, and verified that it booted and presented me with an option to recover. That is the limit of my testing. I take no other responsibility for these discs or whatever you do with them, than that I made them the way I claim.
I recommend that you load the ISO images and verify them for SHA1 hash to same value as listed on a recognized mirror site before using the discs. I also recommend that you do whatever passes for a full system backup on Linux before proceeding, and be prepared for a full disaster recovery, whatever that may entail.
I'll send them to you at no charge via media rate mail (may take a week to deliver?) at this address:
Tom Poe Open Studios 510 15th Avenue Charles City, IA 50616
I wish you well.
And thanks again for your military service.
BTW, do you know what is actually entailed in making a disaster recovery set? I'm rather new to Linux admin. myself. Separate e-mail to me might be more appropriate than contact via this echo. Any help appreciated.
