Hi,
I am trying to access my BlackBerry Bold 9780 from my Fedora 14 default GNOME desktop so I can copy some music and ring tones to it. But when I plug it in nothing happens. However, my normal USB Key and external hard drive work perfectly; when connected they are mounted and Nautilus displays their contents.
I can see my phone is attached. One way to identify whichdevice is you phone:
1. unplug your phone. 2. post the output of ls /dev/sd*
3. plug in your phone, and wait a couple of seconds. 4. post the output of ls /dev/sd* The new device that appears in the output is the phone. You can then mount it.

Judging from that, it's /dev/sdb. Do an "fdisk -l /dev/sdb" and you should find the partition (IIRC, it'll be /dev/sdb1). By default, Fedora doesn't automount those devices unless you put in a udev rule for it. So must "mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt" and access /mnt.
Here is my /etc/udev/rules.d/99-blackberry.rules:

Yup,
Sdb is where my BlackBerry is attached, but it doesn't seem to work.

/dev/sdb is the device, /dev/sdb1 is the first partition. You need to mount the partition, not the device.

Right now, I have an mp3 player mounted in /media. The device is /dev/sdd and fdisk -l shows that it has four partitions, but none of them show up in /dev as /dev/sdbN and /etc/mtab shows it mounted simply as /dev/sdd.

I've no idea why that should be (although it looks wierd). I was merely pointing out that Rick Steven's earlier reply specifically said to mount /dev/sdb1, which the OP seems to have misread.

There aren't any partitions devices to mount.

Just throwing this out there, ignore if it's irrelevant..
On my old BB Storm 1, I had to turn on "Mass Storage" or "Use as USB Storage" or some such option in settings before it would appear as a drive on my linux box.
I no longer have that unit (thank god) so I'm not sure of the exact location.
Have you looked through your options/settings on the device?
Take care. -- Don Krause

I just tried this with my BB 8520. I plugged in the BB, got a pop-up on the phone asking if I wanted Mass Storage mode, confirmed it, got the KDE Device Manager pop-up, clicked appropriately and duly saw the BB mounted as /media/BLACKBERRY, with an interesting set of subdirectories.
The device logged by dmesg was /dev/sdc1.

Worked it out with help from a friend. Can only configure the BlackBerry to present as mass storage while attached and charging, otherwise the option not available.
My friend's Ubuntu box makes it easier. Just plugin the BlackBerry and it automatically displays the menu: USB Drive, Sync Media, Charge Only. I guess it has different/better udev rules.
Thanks, Mike
