I have a Philips Freevents X51 laptop and I'm having real problems getting the F7 installation DVD to boot.
It boots to the initial screen, where you press "enter" to start the installation, but at that point it seems that the keyboard is unrecognised. Pressing any key has no effect at all.
I've used DVDs burnt from downloaded ISOs and the DVD that came free with this month's copy of Linux Format. But they all fail in the same way. The same DVDs have worked successfully on other computers.
Some time ago I successfully installed FC6 from DVD on this laptop and it's currently running Ubuntu which I installed from a magazine cover disk. But I'm getting frustrated with Ubuntu and want to come home to Fedora.
Any advice?
Thanks,
Dave...

I think where you are in the loading you don't need any keys. Tell me if your mouse works and can you click on the thing in the far left bottom? It takes a long time to go on but just be patient.

Yes. If the F7 does not load for some reason load your FC6 back up. That is what I am using and it works fine. I like FC6 but have loaded F7 and will putter around on it a bit.

I think you're wrong. I think you may be misunderstanding how soon in the process I see the problem. This is the initial text screen. Where it says "press [enter] to continue".

As I understand it, there's no mouse driver loaded at this point. There's certainly no mouse pointer visible. And I wouldn't expect to see one.

Hi Dave, well your saying it is stopping before you see a pointer on your screen. That makes me think now that the loader thinks you have too little RAM to load in the usual way. You have few choices then. I think if FC6 loaded fine your better to get that back running.

Have you any evidence for these statements. Although I have yet to load FC7 onto some of my older machines, when I have installed earlier versions I have alwasy managed find with a non-GUI installation.
I would also think that recomending FC6 as better is not a good solution - it will eventiually become unsecure as it becomes out of date. BEtter to work on solving any problems in FC7, that being forced to revert to older versions. Are you sure you are not just saying this becasue of your sound card problems?

I had this problem back when first trying to install Linux (Severn, not sure which beta).
The problem was due to a USB legacy setting which was set active. USB legacy mode locked up my laptop like you are referring to. I'm not sure if your BIOS would refer to it as USB legacy or USB keyboard. Anyway, having it set caused the laptop keyboard to not function.

Interesting suggestion. I did have a USB legacy setting in my BIOS, but changing it from "auto" to "disabled" didn't change what happened.
Thanks anyway,

I had that problem before and know that you are pretty well limited once the keyboard stops responding for the laptop.
Anyway, I doubt the disks are burned incorrectly and the problem is with hardware recognition during installation.
Is it possible for you to get a hold of a USB keyboard and see if you could install F7 using the external keyboard? You do not want to use this method post install for a laptop, but hopefully it does not effect F7 itself and your internal laptop keyboard will work.
Thanks anyway,
Sorry the first suggestion did not work for you. Same symptoms, different causes. Maybe there is an option to the installer to disable USB legacy. What happens if you disable plug and pray?
