I use startx to start my graphical sessions after booting to runlevel 3 / multiuser, and have no problem. I've seen this problem, but not recently. I think it means that your user is not in the proper groups to be allowed to switch to root when running X. As root, run cat /etc/group | grep pdupre Are you in the wheel, video, and audio groups? I think if you add yourself to those groups, X will start for you as a normal user.

X doesn't need root any more. There was a big push a few years ago to make that possible. I just tested this by creating a new user, switching to a console, logging in as that user, and running "startx". It immediately started a Gnome session.

Check the Unix permissions and selinux context of your home directory.
From previous posts it sounded like your home is now a separate luks2 volume? Did you create a new home for there?

You need to check that you have a session configured, otherwise the server will exit. See "man startx" for explanation on where it looks for startup applications. I don't know why it works as root. I guess it's finding different config.
Try "startx -- -noreset -retro" and see what happens.

Hello,
Now it works !
I do not any rational explanation!
I made several manipulations
I though that it was due to .xinitrc #!/bin/sh if [ -s ~/.Xmodmap ]; then xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap fi
but now I do not think so.

Actually, there is still a small problem.
It works if I run startx from a tty terminal afte booting. but it does not work from a graphic environment. Choosing the user, I can enter the password, and than it is stuck during a while before it offers me to enter again the password, but then I cannot get a tty terminal. The graphic is frozen.
I have to shutdown the laptop.

I don't understand what you're trying to do. You have to run X from a console, not from within a running graphic environment. Why are you even trying to do that if you already have X running?
What I am doing is simple.
I boot. I get the graphical environment/display offering the user list (X). Now 2 options 1) I login "normally" bu providing a password. After that, the graphic freezes for a small while (1-2 Minute), and I can try the same thing, wit the same result. Only one solution: reboot (for example by login from the network). 2) Ctl/Atl F2. I get a text terminal and I log in text mode I run startx and the X mode opens, every thing run properly (gnome).
Is it clear?

Does the login user have a VNC server running? If I connect a monitor to a normally headless server something similar happens. VNC servers are being started using systemd.

I haven't tried that -- just use the text terminal to stop the VNC server.

But the issue is specific to one user only.
That is what I observe: logging in as a user that has a vncserver running goes to a blank screen, while other logins work normally.
There is a nextcloud running normally automatically (startup application). But, now, after the startx, I have to start it manually.
Please note that I have the same configuration on another fc36 machine, and I cannot complain.
