I need help getting past a grey screen on disk 1 of the fedora ppc install. nothing changes it. It will begin to install from the boot prompt and then at the end of the first set of instructions, it switches to a grey screen and thats it. Any thoughts?

How about starting the install from the first prompt with
linux text
to install in text mode?

Another option is to start the install with 'linux xdriver=vesa' to get the installation to use the vesa driver instead. If you wanted to assure that the installer used any particular driver, you can add that driver after xdriver=<mydriver>
The gray screen usually indicates poor xdriver detection. Specifying a particular driver may prevent the failure.

That's right, but I don't know that there are vesa modes or a vesa BIOS on what is presumably Apple PPC hardware (never owned an Apple).

I did try >linux text and >linux nofb to no avail and then ended up using an adapter to a vga monitor from the DVI out and just used a standard vga monitor and it seems to be installing fine so far. I hope later to be able to get the driver working for my monitor after the full install.
A separate question, If I had the choice to install Fedora onto an intel/mac rather than the G5 dual 2.7 I have now, could I be limiting my ability to grow with linux releases and functionality by staying with the non-intel chip? I am trying to avoid building myself into a box (yes..pun intended) that could raise issues in the future if those issues could be eliminated with the newer intel/mac. The overall object of this install was to turn this box into a reliable testing server for beta postgresql projects.

PowerPC appears to be, well, not dying, but moving into non-PC niches like Xilinx FPGAs and Playstation 3, so I guess the main worry would be about Fedora eventually dropping support for it in the next years. I guess if it costs something to move to Intel, I would stick with the PowerPC box for now since you mainly want serving action from it which should be easy to deliver well, and if PowerPC continues its decline you can move in a couple of years. Yellowdog is a distro that is predicated around PowerPC so you could always migrate to that as a backup plan. But if it costs nothing to use an Intel box, you are on a safer bet with Fedora on an Intel architecture I would think.

That's a relief that PPC development is still continuing and probably will be around for awhile. We just recently started using embedded devices with fpga to replace the preceding devices which required firmware for the limited devices and an additional PC to run the program that deals with the limited capability scanners. The new series runs both the scanning software and whatever was needed before for the limited device to relay data back to the PCs of the past. I'd hate for our newer embedded devices to have to resort to a PC type system for the embedded devices.

Thanks for the thoughts on that. I am coming to the same conclusion for the intel architecture. Linux seems to be running decently on the g5, however it is freezing (and/or really sluggish) when trying to exit from open windows. Other than that I have gotten around the issues i'm finding.

Newither have I owned an Apple PPC. At work the PPC units do not have integrated graphics (Embedded PPC unit running of flash). The video is on an Intel chipset. (another Embedded device running off compact flash.) I guess posting on Apple OS problems would not be very accurate.
