Can I access my /var/spool/mail/$USER using mozilla-mail & thunderbird. When I use the wizard all I see is pop/imap options. may be it's a too dumb question. But any help would be greatly appreciated.

One way of doing this would be to run dovecot as a POP and/or IMAP server on your machine. You could then access your mail using the POP/IMAP options of your mail client.

I don't remember exactly since which version (1.2 perhaps) the move-mail protocol is available as pop and imap (as under netscape 4).
Edition / Mail prefs / Add a account (as i'm in french the name could be different).
But effectively i remember it's only available when adding a new account, not on the "first time" wizard.

In fact, i'm used to read my 'Administrator' mail using "movemail" under netscape 4 because "root" is the only user which cannot connect under pop/imap.
Now, i'm used to redirect all root's mail from all servers to a admin account on the mail server, and then i can use IMAP.

Thanks everyone for all your help. All i did was installed imap using yum and I am up and running.
