I've just installed aiglx on FC5 using the rpms at http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/projects/aiglx/i386/. It seems to be working fine. I get nice drop shadows under all of my windows and there's an interesting breaking glass effect when I minimise a window.
But is that is does currently? Are there any other effects that I should be looking for? Or some kind of configuration editor to control the effects?
Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy with what it does so far. I just want to make sure that I'm getting all I can out of it.
Cheers,
Dave...

I think that is all there is atm. Aiglx was, according to the fedora project wiki, supposed to be updated during the fc5 cycle, but I have not seen any updates to repository since the initial release on the 18. of april.

AIGLX is now part of Xorg 7.1 which is already in the Fedora development tree. It might be provided as an update to FC5 but I havent heard of any decision on that yet.

Hi Trond,
I would like to hear your thoughts on the Novell version of XGL as shown in this cool google video:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-199899523054020719&q=Linux
Is the Fedora version anywhere as advanced as this ?, the last time I tried it, it really screwed up my configuration and it took a lot of yuming to fix.
For me, watching this video make me feel really jealous, However, I agree with the Fedora development approach on the GLX issues but, Novel have all this candy "in the here and now", and I think that makes a big difference, are we talking Fedora 10 ?
Well I suppose at least it's on Linux before Vista :)
Thanks in advance.
Albert.

... which is the reason it wasnt installed by default and marked experimental. Anyway you are seeing Compiz which is a window manager that provides the whiz bang effects and confusing that with the underlying framework. Metacity has a compositing manager with similar effects and Compiz can run on AIGLX too.

As I said earlier AIGLX is part of Xorg 7.1 and easily enabled now.

Xorg 7.1 will be part of Fedora Core 6.

If you want a real taste of it without switching distros nor compromising your current setup, try the kororaa live distro. It has XGL. Note that like Novell's video, the desktop is Gnome. At the time I tried it, I seem to remember some article saying KDE support for XGL was in the works.
I tried XGL on ubuntu, and I have to dissapoint you and say that Xgl beats aiglx when it comes to Bling(c). I do not know what the current status of aiglx is, since the fedora aiglx repository have not been updated since april.
If you want to try aiglx on fedora, make shure that your graphics card is supported before you install it. Atm it only works with open source drivers like i810.

Ah, that is great! Will AIGLX be enabled by default in FC6, or do I have to recompile Xorg to use it?

There was never a need to recompile Xorg at any point of time to enable AIGLX. Having said that, composite which is required by AIGLX doesnt work on all hardware and this feature is likely to be disabled by default. It would as easy as changing a option in the configuration file to enable it however.
