Various routines send messages to root@<local domain> normally using the setting "mailto=root", For example /etc/anacrontab and /etc/crontab.
Is there a central place where such can be redirected to an external mail address?
Yep, just edit /etc/aliases file, last line. Uncomment it, change the *mark* value that is listed by default, to user@domain.com. Restart sendmail and should be all set. Of course, that box will need to be able to send emails out if not already configured to do so.
Just send root a test email to see what happens.
