Boot breaks on Hardware probing
by Roger Grosswiler
Hi,
Installed now FC5 T1 via CD's - all went well. Then, rebooting, udev
startink ok - Hardware *ouch* it stops.
I went in rescue mode, checked out selinux and checked for the
smp-kernel which i read in another thread. "Unfortunately" i have the
correct kernel installed.
My logs tell me, that everything is ok. Anybody a hint, what i have to
look for in dmesg? also i found in anaconda.syslog an entry for a
defective sector 0 on fd0 - i have no floppy installed ;-)

kernel-2.6.14-1.1639_FC5 - dead usb
by Marius Andreiana
Hi,
After upgrading to rawhide kernel (including kudzu, udev, hwdata..) USB
stopped working. I also have an optical mouse on usb, and when kernel
boots the light in it dies.
service kudzu start doesn't detect anything at first run, at 2nd run it
says "mmap: /dev/mem Permission denied"
lsmod|grep usb doesn't show anything, I tried modprobe usbnet (for my
usb modem), no error but no usb too. /var/log/messages has no activity
when plugging/unplugging usb devices.
Is this a known problem? The chipset is Intel 865GL. There is a module
loaded automatically now which I think it wasn't before, i915 and drm.
Thanks,

Desktop Development Specialization
by Joel Juliano
What if Fedora Core development was divided in two divisions, the
GNOME division and the KDE division, the releases will be available to
be GNOME-only or KDE-only releases on seperate iso's, the GNOME ISO
will specializes only on GNOME softwares and applications. There will
be a micro-managed bug fixing for GNOME-only related softwares, the
effort will be concentrating on much more focused approach than the
traditional (hybrid ISO's), same to the KDE ISO, wherein include a
KDE-only related (or specialized) softwares and applications.

iptables line 11 error - no firewall?
by Jim Cornette
iptables failed. The error was: Applying iptables firewall rules:
iptables-restore v1.3.4: Unknown arg `--icmp-type'
Error occurred at line: 11
Try `iptables-restore -h' or 'iptables-restore --help' for more information.
[FAILED]
I tried various things to determine which file line 11 is in error with
with the ftp install from November 19th. I did not find out where the
error was located.
I then ran a clean installed with the downloaded FC5T1 (Nov 21) discs
f and ended up with the same problem with line 11.
This error happened with all but telnet allowed and also with all
options unchecked. (ftp,ssh, ...)
I installed firestarter after seeing this error with both installs.
firestarter showed the below.
Warning: External interface previously configured not found

First Experience with FC5T1 - Video, wireless issues (Long)
by Partha Bagchi
Here is my first experience with FC5T1.
The release notes do not state that the install options - hard drive or
USB drive are broken. (It was on line however). Wasted more than a hour
trying to install from USB drive first and then from hard drive second
partition. Then realized from checking the test forum that this
installation option was broken.
After burning the CDs, did the install which went well - that is without
any major hiccups along the way.
The video card is incorrectly recognized. My card is an ATI mobility
9000. It is now recognized as:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R250 Lf
[FireGL 9000] (rev 01)
Attempts to change this resulted in a the following error:
> system-config-display
> /usr/share/system-config-display/xconf.py:32: DeprecationWarning:
> rhpl.monitor is deprecated; import rhpxl.monitor instead.

So, cannot change the video card.
When I first booted, the network recognition was all screwed up. It
insisted that my
Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter (rev 04)
is an ethernet card (not wireless) and would not let me change it. I had
to disable avahi before I could clean that mess as my ethernet
controller was also messed up because of that. Needed to clean the
network configuration by creating and editing the ifcfg-eth0 and
ifcfg-eth1 scripts manually. BTW, is /lib/firmware still the location
for the firmware?
After updating the system this morning with "yum update", started
getting this error at boot:
Applying iptables firewall rules: iptables-restore v1.3.4: Unknown
arg `--icmp-type'
Error occurred at line: 11
Try `iptables-restore -h' or 'iptables-restore --help' for more
information.
(Could not find the exact line in the log. Where is this message stored?)
Bluetooth is initialized automatically, but there is this line in the log:
hcid[2052]: Can't open system message bus connection: Failed to
connect to socket
/var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory
Perhaps because no bluetooth device is attached to the system currently ?
Thunderbird is not installed automatically. After manual install with
yum, I changed over to it as my default email. However, when Thunderbird
is minimized, it only shows a generic icon on the minimized window and
not the Thunderbird icon I am used to.
The system seems remarkably stable. I am happy with it. Now I am hoping
that the above errors will resolve themselves by Test2. I think the core
team has done a wonderful job with this new release. Looking forward to
using the final version when available.
System Info: Presario X1000 Laptop.
Thanks,
Partha
