yum broken dep default behaviour
by Rudolf Kastl
Hello List,
Actually i looked a bit deeper into yum when i had time yesterdays.
And since i identified some broken dep chains on my test system which
yum just quietly accepted i decided to write this email to the test
list regarding default yum behaviour.
Actually i personally dont like this default behaviour at all. Even if
yum is meant to be fault tolerant to not block necassery security
update on a "broken system" there should atleast warnings be
outputted.
Id be curious about the official statement regarding that issue.
Wouldnt it make sense to warn the user when he has a "broken system"
without using other tools than yum or special options?
For those few people that like to have broken dep chains and hate to
be warned every time for whatever reason a simple configure option
would be sufficient in my eyes, this doesent apply to the default
fedora user though in my eyes.
regards,
Rudolf Kastl

dim/unreadable display on FC5test1 and Dell Inspiron 1100
by Cliff Nadler
I finally got FC5test1 installed on my Dell Inspiron 1100 last night, but I
had to use and external monitor to get through the installation. The problem
was that the display was set to an unreadable brightness, and nothing I did
could change that (except for the external monitor).
The installation program would not recognize the 1100's LCD panel. When I
first rebooted after the install, it handled the 800x600 resolution fine,
but after firstboot ran, and I configured the Dell 1024x768 LCD for the
monitor, I got the unreadable dim display again.
This machine ran fine with FC4, and I installed over the FC4 image
(reformatting, of course). BIOS is A31, so it looks like I'm not hitting the
BIOS issues I've seen reported on the web.
Any ideas? I'll probably change it back to a generic 1024x768 LCD if I can
get the external monitor working with it again.
Thanks,
Cliff

Announcing Fedora Core 5 Test1
by Warren Togami
For some, it will be a day of thanksgiving - a day to be grateful for
the many blessings they have. For others, it will be a day of mourning
(http://www.markehrlich.com/humor/sesamestreet.htm). For Fedora Core
fans, however, it will be a day of rejoicing and installing, for we are
proud to announce:
Fedora Core 5 Test1 Now Available
=================================
The Fedora Project announces the first release of the Fedora Core 5
development cycle, available for the i386, x86_64, and PPC/PPC64
architectures. Beware that Test releases are recommended only for Linux
experts/enthusiasts or for technology evaluation, as many parts are
likely to be broken and the rate of change is rapid.
http://fedora.redhat.com/participate/schedule/
Test2 is scheduled for release before Christmas giving us less than a
month of rapid development. This aggressive schedule makes vitally
important your help in testing, reporting and suggesting fixes for bugs.
Please direct bugs to http://bugzilla.redhat.com, Product Fedora Core,
Version fc5test1. As always, be sure that your bug is not already fixed
by updates and search for existing bugs before filing.
Thanks to all in the Fedora Project who have contributed to this
release. Your continued efforts is what makes Fedora possible.
Downloads
=========
A DVD image is unfortunately not available for FC5test1 due, but we do
plan on having it for test2. CD and network installation are available.
Please read the Important Warnings below in this announcement for more
details.
http://torrent.fedoraproject.org/
The recommended method of download is via BitTorrent from this site.
http://fedora.redhat.com/download/mirrors.html
HTTP, FTP, and RSYNC downloads are available from Fedora Project mirrors
listed above. Note that not all mirrors may be synced at this time.

Important Warnings
==================
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FC5Test1CommonProblems
Please see this page for an updated list of important notes for FC5test1
in order to avoid common problems and troubleshoot problems that you may
see.
* Fresh Installs Only
Upgrades are not supported (or even implemented). If you want to test
Upgrade capability, please wait until FC5test2.
* NX (No Execute) capable processors (all AMD64 and 2nd and later
steppings of EM64T) installing the i386 arch of FC5test1 may experience
an inability to boot the SMP kernel after install. Please try the
Uniprocessor kernel or kernel parameter "mem=nopentium" in order to boot
for now.
* No DVD is Available, CD or Network Install Only
* Hard drive install is broken
* Minimal install with everything deselected may crash.
Have fun testing this release, and please be safe.

xorg-x11-xdm-1:0.99.3-6
-----------------------
* Thu Nov 24 2005 Mike A. Harris <mharris(a)redhat.com> 1:0.99.3-6
- Updated xdm.pamd to work with recent pam changes, and bumped the minimum
pam requirement up to 0.78-0 for FC5 builds. (#170661)
- Added "Requires(pre): xorg-x11-filesystem >= 0.99.2-3", as the xdm package
puts files into /usr/lib/X11, so we have to make sure it is not a symlink.
- Removed "filesystem" package dependency, as xorg-x11-filesystem carries
that dependency now, so it can be updated in one spot.
- Added missing "BuildRequires: pkgconfig".
- Added xdm-0.99.3-xdm-app-defaults-in-datadir.patch to force app-defaults
files to install into _datadir instead of _libdir.
- Added xdm-0.99.3-xdm-scripts-in-configdir.patch to put the xdm scripts in
_sysconfdir, and removed older xdm-0.99.3-xdm-configdir.patch which hacked
up Makefile.in. Fixes a typo that caused Xreset to not get installed
properly also.

When will they leave the browser bar alone for nautilus (? & !)
by Jim Cornette
I opened up the browser to check out my discs and then navigated to the
directory where I wanted to examine the files that I wanted to access. I
then looked up at the location bar and noticed completely useless
information relating to the label of the CD and buttons with each
directory. This might be nice for some sort of use, though I do not see
many uses of buttons all over the navigation bar.
After I hit ctl-L the location bar displayed valuable information as to
where I was on the filesystem.
Anyway, it is not as bad as the spacial concept that was earlier
introduced, but it has little real world use, since it is not the real
location afterall.
