ISO md5sums
by MJang
Folks,
I've tried downloading the ISOs from a couple of different sites, and
find md5sums which vary from those listed in SHA1SUM file. The ISOs with
the "bad" md5sums seem to work, and those I've downloaded from different
sites have consistent md5sums.
Is the SHA1SUM file correct?
Thanks,
Mike

Increasing boot speeds and early-login for fc5?
by Josh
Good day,
During FC4 development there were plans to include early-login feature and improving boot times.
Although, FC4 included early-login (disabled by default) I haven't seen much improvement in boot speeds.
Does FC5 have this enabled? Anyone notice any improvement in boot speed? I haven't had a chance to test FC5-test1 yet,
Thanks and happy holidays,
Josh

- Allow dhclient route metrics to be specified with DHCP options:
The dhcp-options(5) man-page states:
'option routers ... Routers should be listed in order of preference'
and
'option static-routes ... are listed in descending order of priority' .
No preference / priority could be set with previous dhclient-script .
Now, dhclient-script provides:
Default Gateway (option 'routers') metrics:
Instead of allowing only one default gateway, if more than one router
is specified in the routers option, routers following the first router
will have a 'metric' of their position in the list (1,...N>1).
Option static-routes metrics:
If a target appears in the list more than once, routes for duplicate
targets will have successively greater metrics, starting at 1.

- Changed package version to 0.99.1 to match the upstream font-util tarball
version, and added "Epoch: 1" to the package for upgrades.
- Added font-util-0.99.1-mapdir-use-datadir-fix.patch to fix the font-util
mapfiles data to install into datadir instead of libdir (#173943)
- Added "Requires(pre): libfontenc >= 0.99.2-2" to force a version of
libfontenc to be installed that fixes bug #173453, and to also force it
to be installed before xorg-x11-font-utils in a multi-package rpm
transaction, which will ensure that when font packages get installed
during upgrades via anaconda or yum, that the right libfontenc is being
used by mkfontscale/mkfontdir.
- Added ">= 0.99.2-2" to BuildRequires for libfontenc, as a convenience to
people rebuilding xorg-x11-font-utils, as they'll need to install the new
libfontenc now anyway before they can install the font-utils package.

2.6.14-1.1696_FC5 installs but kernel crashes on boot
by Andy Burns
Hi all,
I have a new machine that I am able to use for testing of FC5, I'm
slightly jumping the gun by using rawhide, it has previously had XP MCE
running OK, and also the unofficial FC4.1 (because the official FC4
didn't recognise the NIC)
I used boot.iso and did an http install from
download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/development/i386/
Installer ran OK, but on startup it loads kernel and then always hangs
and/or reboots after "Write protecting the kernel read-only data"
I've grabbed debug kernel messages using a serial console and nothing I
see helps *me* decide what to try next.
Hardware spec is
Intel D945GTP motherboard, BIOS v3191
P4 3GHz SL7Z9
Radeon X550 PCIe
2x 512MB 667MHz DDRII 4-4-4-12
2x WesternDig 250GB SATA
1x LiteOn DVD-RW LDW-411S
2x Compro Videomate DVB-T200 tuners
During installation the SATA drives were recognised correctly, since
getting the problem I have tried various combinations of BIOS settings
for IDE/AHCI/Legacy/Enhanced settings for the drives, which have made no
difference. The boot CD I made still boots happily into repair mode.
The kernel log is attached to my bugzilla report
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=173904
Anyone else seeing similar? Any suggestions on what to try next?

Sendmail not creating /var/spool/mail/root file after 11/19 install
by Jim Cornette
I have problems related to the root account mail. The mail does not
spool or whatever it is supposed to do. Also when using 'su -' in
gnome-terminal, it fails to change to /root and presents an error
message. If you do 'cd' in the gnome-terminal shell you are changed to
the directory /root .
I'm sure that there are many more bugs encountered with clean
installations. These are just bugs that I noticed since the clean
install of rawhide. The /var/spool/mail/user file was successfully created.
I have no mail coming in from root or user.

Fedora Core 4 Test Update: libtool-1.5.16.multilib2-3
by Jakub Jelinek
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Fedora Test Update Notification
FEDORA-2005-1097
2005-11-22
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Product : Fedora Core 4
Name : libtool
Version : 1.5.16.multilib2
Release : 3
Summary : The GNU Portable Library Tool
Description :
GNU Libtool is a set of shell scripts which automatically configure UNIX and
UNIX-like systems to generically build shared libraries. Libtool provides a
consistent, portable interface which simplifies the process of using shared
libraries.
If you are developing programs which will use shared libraries, but do not use
the rest of the GNU Autotools (such as GNU Autoconf and GNU Automake), you
should install the libtool package.
The libtool package also includes all files needed to integrate the GNU Portable
Library Tool (libtool) and the GNU Libtool Dynamic Module Loader (ltdl) into a
package built using the GNU Autotools (including GNU Autoconf and GNU Automake).
This package includes a modification from the original GNU Libtool to allow
support for multi-architecture systems, such as the AMD64 Opteron and the Intel
64-bit Xeon.

Just a mild rant from a users perspective....
Having used Redhat since the 5.0 days, I think the tool names have
changed way too often. Not only are tool names different between
distributions, but also within distributions. I wish the LSB would
define "meta-names" for common tools. Each distribution could just make
the standard tool names links to the distribution and version specific
tool.
Within Redhat I started with control-panel and glint.
I have progressed through gnome-rpm, gnome-linuxconf, and Update Agent.
Now I have yum and the system-config-* tools.
Am I now looking at something called Pup?
I think the tools are getting better all the time, but I think the name
changes hurt the manageability.
