Evolution fix?
by James Drabb
I am using evolution now under 0.94, so I lost the original thread. As
a temporary fix try this:
cd /usr/bin
mv evolution-1.4 evolution-1.4.orig
vim evolution-1.4
put this in evolution-1.4
#!/bin/bash
LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1 evolution-1.4.orig
chmod 755 evolution-1.4
This should work around the NPTL issues in evolution-wombat.

Severn 2 and kernel-smp-2.6.0-0.test5.1.45.i686.rpm don't get along
by Willem Riede
I upgraded my test box to severn 2 today - went smoothly.
As this is a dual PIII box, I heeded Michael Johnson's warning and
didn't run smp until I upgraded to kernel-smp-2.4.22-1.2075.nptl.i686.rpm.
That went without a hitch too.
So, feeling lucky, I installed Arjan's kernel-smp-2.6.0-0.test5.1.45.i686.rpm
but with that kernel the box hung during the initscripts -- with the graphical
boot it is not as clear where the problem is, but it appears to be with the
advanced power monitoring. Does anyone else see that?
Probably, I should just disable apmd, as my box doesn't support it anyway.
Regards, Willem Riede.

Compiling Kernel
by Robert L Cochran
I have to use the gcc32 compiler to compile the kernel and modules, right?
If so...pardon a dumb question...but do I edit the Makefile variable
CC=gcc to CC=gcc32?
Or do I export a variable CC=gcc32? What's the approved way?
Thanks

Fedora: low mem warning with 512 MB!
by Jos Vos
Hi,
While installing Fedora, it warns me that it will immediately
enable swap because I have too litte mem. But I have 512 MB!
If I look at /proc/meminfo on VC2, I see that it indeed sees
all the mem I have. Is this a known problem?
Cheers,

apt/yum & up2date
by Lorenzo Prince
How can I use up2date to install packages from apt & yum repositories
without the RHN registration coming up? Does that default option in the
sources file take care of that? Every time I try to use up2date it
gives me the RHN screen.

OT: touchpad with scrolling capabilities
by Santiago Erquicia
I know that this doesn't belong to this list, but I would like to know
where should I mention this.
I have a new Toshiba notebook and one thing that I really like about my
touchpad is that if I move my finger at the right part of it upwards or
downwards it scrolls the windows up and down. If I do the same, with my
finger at the bottom part and moving to the left and right, it scrolls
horizontally the window where I am.
Does anyone know who should I comment of this functionality?

anaconda - no add boot-menu
by shrek-m@gmx.de
hi,
i am not sure,
could it be that there is no possibility while installation of severn2
to add an additional boot-menu entry ?
afair there was only [zurueck=back][bearbeiten=edit][ok=ok]
--> [edit] no further possibility for adding a new entry
on this system are 2 different severn1 installations
for further use of severn1 i had to edit /boot/grub/grub.conf after
reboot into severn2
installation:
language-german, user-defined, hd-install from external-usb-hdd
"linux text expert"
;-) mixed languages in info and buttons, at least while
firewall-settings ;-)

Fedora Core: initial encounter (RH doesn't like my machine??)
by Elton Woo
As with Severn beta1 (RH 9.0.93), Fedora Core (RH 9.0.94)
did not install until after three attempts. Previous betas (wolverine,
etc) always installed on the first attempt.
Download ISO's:
Bittorrent was *disappointingly slooooow*. I could have latched
on to a mirror and gotten the three CD's much faster using
mozilla.
Run md5sums, ISO's check out OK, burnt 'em with K3b.
Burn successful _no error_ messages whatever.
Boot, check media = OK, proceed ... and THEN --->
With Fedora, my first install resulted in a kernel oops (evinced
by my flashing keyboard lights. Because it refused to create
the boot disk (two previously used 1.44M diskettes in my
LS-120 drive aka /dev/hdb).
Second try: "Install Everything": "error installing ncurses 5.3.9
... you may have insufficient space [on a 20 Gb drive!!!??] or
this might indicate a hardware defect" ... hmm, maybe my]
Quantum is failing?
Third try: "Custom" ... <*WHEW*>!!! finally, success!
Old or previous bugs resurface:
1. Install "all packages" fails, as before:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=101078
2. In KDE, the Start Here folder is a "malformed URL"
2. My beloved RFE is still a RFE. I had to configure the scanner.
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=80613
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=101078
3. After installing, redhat-configure-packages, keeps insisting
on "install disk". Install only works from the console window
or by clicking on the icons in the nautilus CD window.
4. Autologin dialog "unreadable"
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=101511
5. Kmail still misbehaves:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=102532
6. Since the Start Here is malformed in KDE, I can't add
startup programs.
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=102533
Graphical boot is indeed faster. Should I remove sendmail
to speed up things?
During installation, I'm pretty sure I saw something mentioned
about a joystick configuration applet, but I find no such
item.

Upgrading an LVM System
by Mark W. Jeanmougin
Most of my boxes use LVM for disk management. When I use Fedora Core (or
Severn, or Shrike) to try to upgrade from a system based on LVM, I get the
following error:
Mount failed
One or more of the file systems listed in the /etc/fstab on your Linux
system cannot be mounted. Please fix this problem and try to upgrade
again.
First off, this would be much easier to troubleshoot if it listed which
filesystems couldn't be mounted.
Second, it would be nice if you could adjust the contents of your
/etc/fstab and then try again, rather than having to reboot.
Of course, the root cause of the problem is that you should be able to
upgrade a system which was installed onto LVM.
Should I bugzilla this?
Thanks,
MJ
