My problems with Test2
by Louis Garcia
Can someone tell me where to log my bugs? Do I still use redhat
bugzilla? Under what version is this beta?
Ok, the installer went fine for me but when I got to the first boot the
mouse did mot work, it was stuck in the corner. I'm using a microsoft
ps/2 mouse. is keyboard nav available during first boot? Noticed that
console services did not start.
I always like to recompile the redhat kernel for my box. I grabbed the
kernel srpm modified kernel-2.4.22-i686.config and recompiled. I was
able to boot the kernel but modules were not working. As I found out the
modules.* files under /lib/modules/2.4.22* were not created. modprobe
was looking for modules.dep. Not sure if this is created during build or
is part of %post.
I'll find more stuff tomorrow.

ext3fs crash
by Rainer Hattenhauer
Hi,
another problem with fedora-core test2:
Some processes which origins I couldn't explain produced heavy CPU-load
(unfortunately I didn't noted their names, one of them was called fam, so
far I remember), so I tried to reboot the system. During reboot sequence,
there was a message like "couldn't unmount root filesystem".
Booting again, the filesystem check gave a message that the ext3fs is
corrupted. Fixing didn't succeed by the automatic sequence, so I rebooted
again with <Ctrl>+<d>.
And now, every time I boot the system, the root file system is mounted as
ext2fs, message at boot up like that:
EXT-fs warning ... ext2_read_super: mounting ext3 filesystem as ext2
When trying the command "mount", root is shown as ext3, but when I try cat
/proc/mounts, you can see clearly that is mounted indeed as ext2.
Any ideas how to fix the ext3fs ? Perhaps deleting the old journal (how?)
I've allready booted up knoppix live cd and tried to fix the problem with
ext3fs.fsck, but there are no problems reported, the filesystem seemed to be
o.k., I was able to mount the partition under knoppix as ext3, it works
without problems.
Any ideas how to fix ext3 under fedora-core ?

Packaging Standards
by Maynard Kuona
I think one other thing Fedora could try to do is come up with a
packaging standard that they could encourage other rpm distributors
(third party) to follow.
For example, Gstreamer involves a lot of plugins for multimedia, and you
will find out that many people try to put these plugins in huge single
packages, and others prefer to distribute them singly. I think a case
could be made for each approach, but sometimes this can cause problems.
A suggestion in this case would be to encourage people to distribute the
packages singly, but if someone is interested in distributing them
together, they could create a container package which depends on all the
plugin packages to be installed. So instead of gstreamer-plugins being
one huge file, it could be a small file which apt uses to pull in
dependencies. This way, when someone releases a new plugin, one doesn't
have to repackage the whole thing, just offer the new plugin in its
place, and it is much easier to keep this up to date IMO of course.
Any comments.

Test 2: pam_krb5 is broken

Hi!
I've been unable to make pam_krb5 work on Fedora Core Test 2, although
it worked fine on Severn Beta 1. I have used authconfig to configure
Kerberos V authentication, but every time I try to log on using a valid
Kerberos V realm account, this is what I see on /var/log/secure:

ACPI and reboot problems solved
by Lorenzo Prince
Well, I fixed my laptop and now the power button not only runs the
shutdown command properly, but the computer actually shuts all the way
down properly. Also, the 3-finger solute and the reboot command now
work as expected.
Seems I did something very stupid. Instead of backing up my files over
the network and moving them back after install, I decided to simply try
renaming /etc, /home and /root and removing /var, /usr/ /bin, /sbin and
a fiew other things that I new if left in place would cause conflicts.
Then I installed the test release without formatting the / partition.
Apparently, there were still conflicts for some reason. I discovered
that the file /etc/redhat-release and rpm -qi redhat-release said 2
different things. I then actually copied all the omportant stuff to my
server and reinstalled, this time formatting all partitions, and this
time, SUCCESS! So far, everything that I was having trouble with is
working as expected.
Now to see if I still get the error in the Gnome volume control...
Thanks for the help,
Prince

94 text install fails
by sean darcy
The severn -94 text install failed just after the choice of upgrade or
reinstall. Here's the traceback:
File "/usr/bin/anaconda", line 1106 in ?
intf.run(id, dispatch, configFileData)
File "/usr/lib/anaconda/text.py", line 451,
in run rc = apply (win, (self.screen,) + args)
TypeError: __call__() takes exactly 2 arguments ( 4 given )
Did a graphical install. worked fine.

Re: problems with samba 3

Hello again,

Didn't solved my problem. I've experimented with
security = user
and
security = share
same effect:
you see the Linux-box from WinXP, but you can't browse it.
Searching for the problem goes on....

fedora test2: ACPI failure on Sony laptop
by G Schneider
I installed fedora test2 on a Sony GRX700 laptop:
ACPI does not work. It works fine on severn beta1 and
on RH9 + vanilla 2.4.22 kernel.
If I try loading the acpi related modules I get errors
like
# /sbin/modprobe ac
/lib/modules/2.4.22-1.2061.nptl/kernel/drivers/acpi/ac.o:
init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module
parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the
output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.22-1.2061.nptl/kernel/drivers/acpi/ac.o:
insmod
/lib/modules/2.4.22-1.2061.nptl/kernel/drivers/acpi/ac.o
failed
/lib/modules/2.4.22-1.2061.nptl/kernel/drivers/acpi/ac.o:
insmod ac failed
in dmesg I find the line
ACPI: Subsystem revision 20030916
ACPI: Interpreter disabled. <======
PCI: PCI BIOS revision 2.10 entry at 0xfd9ca, last
bus=2
Instead apm is running, including the apmd daemon. Of
course on this laptop acpi is necessary for almost
everything.
