You're right. Seemingly, I missed or misinterpreted the "no longer maintained" part when I first read the email. This is what happens when I don't get enough sleep ;).
Is the fork a drop-in replacement or otherwise compatible with the original? If so, you should add the appropriate Provides/Obsoletes to the new package.
