gdm at least runs session agents like gnome-power-manager so that you
can get events like this.
GDM essentially starts up a full-blown desktop environment in the display
manager, which IMHO is really overkill! How much stuff do you need running to
prompt for username and password? Meanwhile KDM gets along just fine without
even a window manager, let alone all those daemons.
