The filter logic is from upstream. If the old cdrecord works and the new one
doesn't then it sounds like the cdrecord package has changes to deliberately
issue commands it doesn't need and then fail to fall back to mmc.
Strange, but then I find its maintainer a little odd in his choices
I didn't think anyone would dare writing it, but this thought has
occurred to me too
