it's really a
manifestation of the fact that logging in via xdm/gdm/kdm starts a
session which never invokes a login shell, and so /etc/profile is never
read -
That doesn't sound right. When GDM starts a user,
/etc/X11/xdm/Xsession
should get run which does start a login shell. Could you file a bug
about this please?
