My telephone exchange always introduces echo on the line unless I run
'hdparm -u1 /dev/hda'. Are we being overly conservative with that

For most PCI IDE controllers yes I think so. I'd be more caution on RZ1000
or CMD640 but I think a patch to turn irq unmask on by default for the others
would be good. Bartlomiej might well accept it if you sent it too
