FWIW, it doesn't require you to actually run m4. There's a Makefile
to do that for you.
I take it that you dislike autoconf scripts for similar reasons?
autoconf scripts only need to be run when a program is compiled, m4
either directly or indirectly needs to be run whenever you change the
config file for sendmail, there is a difference :)
