The usual reason I have seen slowdowns on Laptops is due to slow IDE
drives. My systems (all less than 1 GHZ, all less than 385 MB) see
similar numbers of 10-15 seconds on first and less on the second.

Wow...that is _slow_...are you sure there's nothing wrong with your
laptop?
Here on my Compaq Celeron 1.4Ghz with 256 Mb of ram, it takes about 6
seconds to start the first time and about 3 seconds the second time.
