This concern has some legitimacy. But OTOH someone could stuff the
same code into configure.ac or Makefile.am, and it's likely very few
people would notice.
My concern is more like, if you want or need to change configure.ac after
all, you end up having to redo all the changes which were hacked directly
into configure. Often, the simplest fix for configure doesn't work as is in
configure.ac (because it messes with a template snippet), the fix has to be
rewritten for configure.ac.
