You may have been working with them since the earliy nineties, but the
feature was only introduced in 2.04 in 2000. Programmable completion
is fairly modern compared to the rest of bash...
That was one of the reasons I switched to zsh.
It had far superior completion back then.
Bash has closed the gap, since.
