I don't think it _does_ need to be solved. We just shouldn't need to
have both versions of a binary installed at the same time.

easily solved - is that of libraries, where I think a general consensus
to split them out into -libs packages over time would do the trick.
Indeed. Split binaries from libraries, and _remove_ the hack in RPM
which allows 'conflicting' binaries to install by choosing one or the
other.
