Have you reported bugs regarding this - especially mplayer?
It's not an mplayer bug - it's a problem with Xvideo under Beryl with the
intel driver.

Jup, my experience also. Plus great matrox cards aren't supported.
OpenGL stuff seems to work mostly ok in Beryl on nVidia cards using the
propriatory driver (although the speed isn't great).
