Personally, I think kernel config is one of the last places to cleanup
after regular apps are taken care of.
Kernel config is the first place to pick low-hanging fruit.
Inflating CONFIG_NR_CPUS from 64 to 255 steals 3MB of physical RAM
from the entire workload. There are many servers (both in numbers
and percentage) with <=4 CPUs and <=1GB RAM where that 3MB could be
used much more productively than by sparse static irq_* tables.
