Quite possibly. It is safe to say most of us do not know your mother;
while your mother may be not versed in scripting, plenty of mothers are.
To be clear: I'm sure you had only the best intentions and are speaking
only about your own parent. However, this kind of example (non-male
assumed to not understand technology) does not foster inclusion (instead
furthering a sexist stereotype).
Some phrases that can be used instead: "a regular user" (what Till
used), "nontechnical user", "non-programmer friend", "a Linux
newcomer",
"the average user", etc..
