If the NSA people were going to do something nasty why would they do
it in
code that's got their name on it when they could send in code from
random_user(a)hotmail.com?
Because such a large patch coming from random_user would raise some
eyebrows, and small patches are not easy to hide such nasty buglets in.
All it takes is a single overflow in the right location... The Trojan
horse was also a "friendly gift".
It's just you can't be careful enough with respect to trusting (foreign)
security agencies ;-) .
