So, as the guy who wrote yum I can say w/almost complete certainty yum
does not fail quietly.
if something 'failed' there was an error message.
if there was an error message and it is not explained by the content of
the error message or the situation then it should probably be filed as a
bug.

It didn't fail quietly, It failed as has been described in this thread, I
just didn't want to continue repeating the same error message. The
description of the problem is valid.
