This shows what I have "felt" while watching my machine crawl though the
boot process: as soon as the syslog daemon comes up, everything gets a
lot slower.
Well, syslogd syncs on every message written, and the boot process spews
a lot of information.
The first thing I did when installing to my laptop was to disable the sync
(slow harddisk).
Perhaps the default could be changed to do syncs only a few minutes
after starting up?
