The synaptics issue is one that really needs to be looked into. My
own particular feeling at the moment is we should look at using
psmouse.proto=imps for synaptics setups for test1, possibly look at
including synaptics driver itself for test2.
I have a reasonably clean spec for synaptics driver, I need to add
synclient/syndaemon to the Imakefile and push changes upstream.
Timescale on this is going to sometime after next weekend due to real
life issues.
If anyone is intrested in working on getting the synaptics detection
done, please let me know.

There is a problem with some synaptic touchpads (like many Sony Vaios)
that are not detected by and seemingly unfixable for the synaptics
XFree86 driver. I suspect there is something obscure and undocumented
about these older touchpads that could possibly be used in order to
actually interface with its functionality, but it cannot be detected. I
haven't spent a lot of time experimenting with forcing the driver to
skip detection yet so I don't know.
