PackageDB-0.4 test instance
by Toshio Kuratomi
A while back I mentioned that there was going to be a new PackageDB that
had some API visible changes. Most notably that the
PackageDB was going to start returning and taking only usernames and
groupnames instead of the mixture of username/groupname and
userid/groupid. This version of the packagedb has settled enough that I
have a test instance up in our staging environment. You can access it here:
https://admin.stg.fedoraproject.org/pkgdb/
There are likely to be many bugs (I've already encountered some bugs in
the treatment of orphaned packages). Please feel free to report them
directly to me for now.
If you have scripts that access the packagedb, now would be a good time
to start testing whether the scripts work with the new version out of
the box or need porting. The userid => username switch is likely to be
the biggest change. Most code that needs porting for this should be
simpler after the porting is done. There has also been some work to the
authentication code and a few minor changes to the API. If you think
you are running into problems here and need me to look at how your code
can be ported to work with the new version feel free to contact me via
IRC (abadger1999) or email.
Note on security: This test instance is running in our staging
environment. The staging environment has a valid SSL certificate and
very closely mirrors what is in the production environment. The servers
here authenticate against a staging FAS server. This server is
populated with data from the production environment but is allowed to
diverge. So if you trust that the staging environment is as secure as
the production environment (Most things are the same but staging is
built to test changes to our environment before they go to production)
you can use your normal fas username/password. If you'd rather not use
your fas password, you can go to:
https://admin.stg.fedoraproject.org/accounts/user/resetpass
to reset your password in the staging environment. Note that some links
on the FAS pages (notably, the "Forgot Password?" and "Sign Up" links
point to the real FAS server instead of the staging account server due
to how our templating currently works. Be sure when you are making
changes that the URL is for https://admin.stg.fedoraproject.org rather
than https://admin.fedoraproject.org.

koji breakage for F12 builds
by Peter Robinson
Just tried building a new package and it seems that it breaks because
xfce4-notifyd conflicts with notification-daemon.... wicked the new
rawhide is broken before the old rawhide is done and dusted :-)

Peter

Guaranteeing running code is signed
by Ahmed Kamal
Hi,
Is there any technology in fedora, that enables me to ensure that ALL
running code on a certain server (even code not installed from RPMs, such as
say by a legacy admin), has been signed by redhat, and to warn me about
un-signed code that is running or about to run. I am interested to verify a
server is in a "known-good" state
Thank you

Bug lifecycle page revised / expanded
by Adam Williamson
Hi, everyone - just a quick note that, last week, I revised / expanded
the bug lifecycle page:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/BugStatusWorkFlow
mostly I just re-ordered it in a logical fashion and extended it to
cover all normal process, states and resolutions.
I'd hope this can now serve as the proper reference for bug workflow for
Fedora: the 'official' reference is currently
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/page.cgi?id=fields.html , but that talks
almost entirely about the RHEL process, not the Fedora one. I'm going to
ask the Bugzilla maintainer to add a little link pointing to the Wiki
page from the Bugzilla one.
I guess the significant points are mostly the 'valid' resolutions, and
resolving Rawhide bugs.
Resolutions - the biggest point is that CURRENTRELEASE is not intended
for use by Fedora. CURRENTRELEASE, for the RHEL process, does not mean
what it looks like it means. What it means is:
"The problem described has been fixed and only ever appeared in
unsupported or unreleased products."
Which really doesn't apply to Fedora at all. So, don't use it :) We
could declare it to mean something different for Fedora, but that would
just be needlessly confusing. The correct resolution to use for a bug in
a stable release that's fixed by an update should be ERRATA, as
mentioned on the page now.
On the use of ERRATA - Jesse Keating informed me that this was decided
against in the past on the grounds that it doesn't mean quite the same
as in RHEL (Fedora doesn't issue erratas exactly), but it's a lot closer
to correct than CURRENTRELEASE or NEXTRELEASE, per their RHEL
definitions. So the choice is use ERRATA, which means almost the same
thing, or invent yet *another* Fedora-only resolution. Which wouldn't be
fun. Currently Bodhi, when used, closes bugs fixed by updates as
NEXTRELEASE; I'll file an issue to switch it to ERRATA.
On resolving Rawhide bugs - this was discussed in a QA meeting, and we
all felt that the MODIFIED / reporter confirms fix cycle should be
optional for Rawhide bugs. So, as the page now says, outside of a freeze
period, you (maintainers) can go directly from ASSIGNED to CLOSED
RAWHIDE if you're confident you've definitely fixed the issue, or you
can take a report out of MODIFIED to CLOSED RAWHIDE if it's been sitting
there for a while and no-one seems inclined to confirm the fix. This is
entirely up to the maintainer's discretion, so it's up to you whether to
never close the bug until it's been confirmed, use MODIFIED but close
after a while if there's no feedback, or just go straight to CLOSED
RAWHIDE and skip MODIFIED. Whichever works best for you.
Everything else should just be an explanation of current practice and
doesn't really need any comment...let me know if anything seems wrong or
odd.
The graphic on the page, for now, reflects only the cycle for bugs in
stable releases, it doesn't quite cover the Rawhide case. It's being
revised.

2009-05-14 - Fedora Test Day - IBus input method
by Li Ming
Greetings testers,
IBus input method - Ibus has been rewritten in C, and provides a simple,
clean default system for changing the way international users input
information into a Fedora system.
Most of the work on iBus is being done upstream by Huang Peng. This
feature proposal covers moving from scim to ibus as the default input
method framework for Fedora 11
iBus is designed to improve a number of deficiencies of scim:
* Ibus has been rewritten in C. Scim written in C++ using STL has
problems with weak symbol conflicts without the added complexity and
lower stability of the scim-bridge layer to workaround that.
* It is possible to write client and engines for ibus in any language
that supports dbus bindings.
* ibus loads engines on demand rather than all installed engines as scim
does, which improves the startup time and memory footprint.
* scim loads engines as dl-modules so a problem in any engine can take
down scim, whereas in ibus because the processes are separated only a
faulty process will die leaving rest of the system working normally.
* The architecture of ibus is bus-centric and so much closer to the CJK
OSS Forum Workgroup 3 draft "Specification of IM engine Service Provider
Interface" architecture, which might be supportable in the future.
I'd like to invite you to join #fedora-qa this Thursday, May 14, 2009 to
test Ibus input method.Get more details from:

Thanks,
Liam

Fedora Community Pre-Beta Testing
by Tom Callaway
Since the previous post was buried in a thread about sound issues (are
all emails on fedora-devel-list about sound issues), and I suspect that
many of you have tuned out on a lot of those awful threads, I wanted to
repost it where it might get seen.
Fedora Community is a project with grand visions, tempered with mostly
sane milestones. Our first milestone is focused on Fedora packagers,
providing them with the information to help them be productive and
minimize the need to jump between the various Fedora web tools (koji,
bodhi, FAS, PKGDB, bugzilla). We've built it on top of Moksha, which you
can read all about here: https://fedorahosted.org/moksha/
The Fedora Community demo instance is running and visible to others. We
have not been
aggressively advertising it up to this point because:
A) It is a test instance, and the performance is non on-par with what it
will be when we go live. We didn't want to spend time wading through the
"OMG THIS IS SLOWER THAN BUGZLILLA!!!1!"
B) We have been constantly cycling it as we've been fixing blocker bugs.
The last thing we wanted was for anyone to think they could depend on it.
C) Anyone who asked to see it has been pointed to it (several folks have
asked).
So, without further ado and the above caveats, look at our pre-beta test
instance:
https://publictest16.fedoraproject.org/community/
We know lots of stuff is broken, we have a pile of blocker bugs open in
our trac instance. Please don't rely on this test instance for anything.
For more information about Fedora Community, please look at:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FedoraCommunity
Thanks,
~spot
P.S. Our second milestone will be codename "Workflows". Got a workflow
that you'd like to see the Fedora Community application handle? Either
email it to me or join the moksha mailing list and suggest it there.
